But the JV Menehune would not go away and came back to outgun Kapa‘a 16-15 in the third quarter after matching up 15-18 in the second quarter.
Steven Rivera, who finished as the top scorer for the JV Menehune, netted nine of his game-total dozen points in the second period with Malcolm Carter chipping in four of his game-total eight points.
Javin Balisacan took the forefront for Waimea in the third frame as he netted a quarter-high five points with Carter and Rivera chipping in four and three points, respectively.
With the Menehune breathing down their neck, Kapa‘a surged ahead 19-13 in the final period as Gausepohl again took the point with seven points followed by Kelvin Villanueva and David Chong each adding three points each.
Gausepohl led all scorers with a game-high 21 points for Kapa‘a followed by Chong finishing with 10 points, including a 2-of-2 showing at the free throw line. Kekoa Colipano and Villanueva followed with 6-point contributions to round out the scoring leaders.
On the Waimea side, Rivera topped all Menehune with a dozen points followed by Carter with eight marks, Balisacan finishing with seven, and Xavier Guirao and Sean Inouye each finishing with six points.
Kapa‘a gets the bye on Friday as it prepares to host Kaua‘i next Tuesday.
Waimea, on the other hand, is seeking its first win as the team travels to the Kaua‘i High School Gym on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
