In the aftermath of the death of a 25-year-old man who jumped off Kipu Falls Saturday, county officials are reminding residents and tourists to educate themselves on water safety.
Earnest Webb of Chicago was pulled out of the water by two people Saturday in the area before rescue personnel arrived, shortly after 1:30 p.m., a release issued yesterday by the county states.
Webb was later transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman, said.
Webb was a cruise ship employee on the Pride of Hawai‘i, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
The county has augmented its safety resources over the past eight years, Daubert said, including the Kaua‘i Beach Safety Guide, which is distributed at hotels and on local brochure racks.
The guide identifies what type of dangers exist or precautions that should be taken at each beach. Kipu Falls is not listed in the guide.
The reason it is not listed is because the county does not encourage anyone to go there, Daubert said.
The hearts of county officials go out to Webb’s family members, she added.
