WAIMEA — If Waimea can get past Kamehameha-Hawai‘i, and Campbell can get past Mililani starting at 9 a.m., there will be a four-way tie for the lead in the Blue Pool.
That is the kind of competition that is taking place at the Waimea Canyon Park as Waimea High School hosts the annual softball invitational that started Thanksgiving Day.
Host Waimea came from behind with a big fourth inning yesterday to take a 5-4 win over the Campbell Sabers in pool play.
The Sabers struck early as pitcher Kai Clark drove in Loreen Egdamin for the 1-0 edge.
Leinna Kalua followed that feat in the second inning, laying down a bunt single that coupled with Menehune throwing errors resulted in a 2-RBI in-the-park homerun for the 4-0 Campbell bulge.
But Waimea came back in the fourth inning as a Menehune runner scored on a Saber passed ball and four RBI hits from Kanani Mata, Tatum Gonsalves, Ona Defabian and Moani Durant to nip the Sabers.
Currently, Mililani leads the Blue standings with four runs allowed and a 4-0-0 record.
Campbell, with the loss to Waimea, follows with 11 runs allowed and a 3-1-0 record. Waimea’s win over the Sabers puts them in a tie with 16 runs allowed and a 3-1-0 record.
Earlier in the day, the Kapa‘a Warriors had the tying run in the batter’s box when time expired on their 3-0 loss to Iolani.
Kelly Imada, throwing four innings, and Rebecca Kagami, closing with three innings, combined to throw a no-hitter against Kapa‘a.
With the win, Iolani takes the lead in the White Pool with 2 runs allowed and a 4-0-0 record.
Baldwin follows with 5 runs allowed and a 3-1-0 record. Kaua‘i High School, 2-2-0, is in third followed by Kapa‘a, 1-3-0, and King Kekaulike, 0-4-0.
The championship for the tournament begins at 3 p.m. today at the Waimea Canyon Park.
Admission is free and there is a food booth available.
