HANAPEPE — Trey Aguano threw for two touchdowns and Kyren Rapacon added one on the ground as Koloa JPW closed the regular season undefeated with a 20-0 shutout over the Lihu‘e Patriot JPW at Hanapepe Stadium.
Tystin Gummerus pulled in an 11-yard Aguano pass to break a 0-0 halftime stalemate with 8:26 showing in the third quarter. Aguano added the point-after to make it 7-0.
On the last play of the third quarter, Rapacon tapped paydirt on a 21-yard score to push the lead to 13.
With 5:27 remaining in the fourth, Aguano hit Triston Bukoski with a 21-yard bullet and connected with Gummerus again to round out the scoring.
Emayo’s boot a
Kekaha kicker
In PeeWee action, the title came down to one little kicker and one huge kick.
Trailing the Hanapepe Colts PW 6-0 with 6:15 remaining, Kekaha’s Jonathan Tangalin smashed in from the 1-yard line to tie things up, putting the pressure squarely on the shoulder pads of Alika Emayo. Emayo split the uprights for an 8-6 lead, and the defense made it stick.
Hanapepe struck in the opening period on an 8-yard pass from Bryson Tacata to Keoni Ana, but failed to convert on the point-after run. The Colts’ defense almost overcame that, though, holding Kekaha scoreless until the final period.
With the loss, the Colts join a three-way logjam for second place with Kekaha and Lihu‘e — each team finishing the season 4-4 for 8 points. Kapa‘a takes the division on a 5-2 record and 10 points.
Lihu‘e Pats attack
on the ground
The Lihu‘e Patriots Midget team closed its season undefeated with a 28-8 win over Koloa.
Mycah Aquias, Travis Koga and Kekoka Agustin bulled in for touchdowns for Lihu‘e on runs of 7, 30 and 2 yards, and Taran Tani returned a Koloa interception for a touchdown.
The 14-0 Pats took a commanding 14-0 lead at the end of the first after Koga’s scamper on the last play of the quarter. Aquias kicked both PATs.
In the second quarter, Shea Shimabukuro put the icing on Agustin’s touchdown and the defense continued to stay strong, holding Koloa scoreless through the first half.
Koloa prevented a shutout when Vincent Baloran bulldozed up the middle on a 2-yard score and Isaac Tehero kicked the point-after for the final score.
Tacazon gives Colt
PW two TDs
Kenneth Tacazon scored twice to lead the Hanapepe PW Colts to a 19-0 win over Kekaha.
Tacazon took the opening kickoff 74 yards to the end zone, then found himself on the receiving end of a 36-yard touchdown pass from Byron Freitas less than three minutes later.
Kaikea Sonoda ran the point-after following Tacazon’s first score.
With 1:15 remaining in the contest, Mikey Rita topped the Colts’ victory on a 50-yard scoring scamper.
Hanapepe finished the season at 5-2-1 for 11 points, followed by Lihu‘e (3-2-2), Kekaha (1-6-1) and Kapa‘a (1-7).
Lihu‘e Pats PW
comes back
A failed point-after attempt gave Koloa PW a brief lead, but it didn’t last. The Lihu‘e Patriots PW scored 20 unanswered points — most in the second half — to win 26-8.
Kaimana Wilson pulled in a 47-yard aerial from Isaac Ramboyan to put Lihu‘e on the board, but Koloa answered when Ivan Pimental-Illastron snagged a Kawaika Texeira pass for a 14-yard score. After the PAT, Koloa led 8-6 with 7:14 showing in the half.
Austin Oshiro put Lihu‘e back on top for good with 44 seconds left in the half on a 14-yard score. The point-after came up empty, but it didn’t matter.
Brian Haz added a 5-yard score in the third and Ramboyan iced the win on a 1-yard charge in the fourth period.
Igne’s D prevents Kekaha shutout
Trying to prevent a shutout of its own, Kekaha’s offense couldn’t get anything done, so the defense did instead. Stetson Igne recovered a fumbled kickoff in the fourth period and ran it in from the 10.
It was the lone bright spot in a 31-6 shellacking at the hands of Hanapepe.
Torrey Santiago threw for two touchdowns in the first half — to Hino Kanahele and Javin Balisacan — and the Colts defense scored twice as well.
Jace Delos Reyes picked off a Kekaha pass and ran it back 51 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Tresen Lacaden-Bisarra ran another interception back in the fourth. .
Santiago finished 3-4 in point-after kicks for Hanapepe.
With the loss, Hanapepe (7-2) settles for second place in the division with a dozen points followed by Koloa (3-5), Kapa‘a (2-5) and Kekaha (1-7).
Big game Saturday
This sets up an exciting Saturday when the Maile Bowl starts at 8 a.m. at Vidinha Stadium. In a battle of unbeatens, the Koloa Packers JPW will play the Kealakehe Warlords for the honor of representing the JPW at the National Pop Warner Superbowl in Florida in December.
That game kicks off at noon, followed by a must-win contest between the Kapa‘a Eagles and the Lihu‘e Patriots at 2:30 p.m.
The Eagles lead the Pee Wee division with a 5-2 record and 10 points, but the Patriots are in a three-way tie for second with a 4-3 record and 8 points. A Lihu‘e win Saturday means a split championship with Kapa‘a. An Eagles win gives Kapa‘a the crown outright.
