The Waimea High School girls volleyball team got a step closer to the HHSAA Division II state title by handling Wai‘anae 25-18, 25-13 in the opening round of the state championships Monday.
Under the direction of coach Chad Delanoza, the Menehune face fourth-seeded St. Joseph Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at the Punahou gym.
A win would pit the Menehune against the winner of the top-seeded Word of Life-Moloka‘i matchup Wednesday night in the semifinals.
In the opening round Monday, Hilo was the only Neighbor Island team to fall as Moloka‘i got past Kaimuki, 25-22, 25-20 and Hilo fell to Sacred Hearts, 17-25, 19-25.
Finals for the Division II championship take place Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
