Mayor idea small thinking
Our mayor has now unilaterally decided to declare war on “big box” stores. He claims that large stores are not consistent with our rural lifestyle — but if that were the case nobody would shop there and they would soon close. I have no doubt this attempt to stifle freedom is a payoff to those who supported him in the recent election and who might face price competition from other retailers.
Is it coincidence that the day after Costco opened our local gas stations discovered that they could sell gas for 30 cents a gallon less than they had been charging when they had a monopoly? Wal-Mart has been talking about expanding to include grocery items. If this were to come to pass, is there any doubt that food prices throughout the island would go down to meet the competition?
Our mayor has never done anything for the average Kauaian — he has just acted as a mouthpiece for the entrenched special interests. Alas, we will have four more years under his influence. Perhaps the new Kaua‘i County Council will not pass this restriction that only “small” stores are allowed on Kaua‘i. Unfortunately it appears that the same old boys/girls will be re-elected and they will have no qualms about passing this law — which is probably unconstitutional anyway.
I guess the mayor doesn’t realize that the less we need to spend on goods and services, the more money we have to pay our confiscatory county taxes.

Congratulations to The Garden Island for its great sense of humor in putting the mayor’s message of “No more big box stores” on the front page of the Saturday paper.
What better example of “Closing the gate after the sheep are gone.”
With this example, the public can expect to see another front-page humor when 10,000 resort hotel rooms and timeshares are added to Kaua‘i’s inventory of Gold for the Developers.
Onward TGI.

Honored to know nurses
I want our ‘ohana community to know how much our nurses have sacrificed for us and how much this strike has helped us. The day the strike started the nurses were focused on an issue that still remained after almost four months. The issue, “safe patient care.”
They never wavered despite HPH/Wilcox efforts.
Our community is now educated on the facts that a corporate giant can be taken down. The investigation on HPH dealing are open.
The nurses are now considering going back to work. They realize that it is time to fight on the inside for us. HPH/Wilcox has brought in many new physicians, realized that our community is an ‘ohana, and their existence is looking grim.
The nurses have done all this. I am very honored to know them.
Let us keep our support because this is just the beginning.

What an outstanding letter written by Horace Stoessel (The Garden Island, Oct. 17) titled “When will the witchhunt end.”
For those citizens of our community who haven’t been on top of the subject matter that Horace so thoroughly describes, I hope that they will research what he says.
From the get-go of this sordid mess, one man and one man alone has been the target of this conspiracy — K.C. Lum.
First, he was methodically forced to retire as our police chief as the “powers” went after people who supported him like Mike Ching, Carol Furtado, and deputy chief Ron Venneman — all good dedicated people. Then he continues to be a target as he runs for a seat on our Kaua‘i County Council. And, make no mistake about it, this web of deceit and lies to try to destroy him is spread throughout our government including our judicial system.
Let me clarify my last statement. On June 15, our council chair put on an hourlong Power Point supposedly showing how a three-page document was “doctored” or forged by then-retired police chief K.C. Lum.
There is documented evidence that our council chair and our councilmembers knew before the June 15 meeting that this three-page document had not been forged that, in fact, Mr. Lum’s attorney had taken full responsibility for a fax error in the transmission of this document — no doctoring, just a simple computer error.
And yet, knowing what the truth was, our council chair chose to tell the public before Ho‘ike that there was serious concern that criminal intent had taken place and the matter would be turned over to legal authorities.
Then the plot gets worse. Someone turns this “lie” over to the Attorney General’s office and they in turn send seven people from their department into Mr. Lum’s home and remove the hard drive from his computer.
Remember that there is documented evidence that there was no wrongdoing by Mr. Lum or anyone else. However, based on unsubstantiated information his home was entered and his personal property was removed.
Yes, I believe that there is more than enough evidence to prove that a concerted plot is under way to destroy a dedicated, honest man and keep him from representing the people.
But remember that you, the people have the ultimate power to say who will represent you. As the learned Mr. Stoessel said in his closing paragraph, “In the final analysis it is the eligible voters, not elected and appointed officials who will be on trial in the general election.” VOTE.

Our fourth-grade class is currently studying the regions of the United States. We are learning about each state and their environment, landforms, and special places of interest. We are asking for your help. We would like people to send us postcards that show us what your state is like. This would give us the opportunity to get a firsthand look at your state and help us to become aware of the great country we live in. If you would like to write a note on back we would appreciate it.
We want to take this opportunity in advance to thank you for helping us make learning a fun and rewarding experience. We appreciate your help.
