LIHU‘E — Returning most of last season’s roster, the Kapa‘a High School girls’ varsity volleyball squad took Roosevelt, the defending Kaua‘i Challenge champions to the limit yesterday in the opening day of the tournament at the Raiderdome.
With steady play from Poe Gantt and Brittney Carvalho at the net, the Warriors went point for point with the Rough Riders in the best-of-three match.
But in the end, the top-notched OIA school proved too tough for the up and coming Kapa‘a squad, who showed that they can play one of the best teams in the state.
Tournament play started at 8 a.m. and ended around 9 p.m., which is the expected start and finish times for today.
As of 5 p.m. yesterday, in pool A, Mater Dei, the 18th-ranked team in the country, led with a 3-0 record, followed by Kaua‘i at 2-1, Radford at 1-2, and Le Jardin at 3-0.
Memorial paced pool B with a 3-0 record. Waimea and new head coach Chad Delanoza posted a 2-1 showing, followed by HBA at 1-2, and Molokai at 0-3.
In pool C, Roosevelt and Sacred Hearts were 1-0, followed by Kapa‘a and Notre Dame at 0-1.
Pearl City led pool D with a 1-0 record, followed by Kealakehe at 0-1.
The Fourth Annual Kaua‘i Challenge Volleyball Tournament is headed up this year by Impact Volleyball Club’s Shelton Tang, who is also a statistician for the University of Hawai‘i.
Kaua‘i High School varsity girls’ head coach Rich Roberts mentioned that this year’s tournament is the best so far and that the competition is the highest that it’s ever been.
“We’re hitting our goals and the exposure for the teams and players is great. The parents and sponsors of this tournament really make it happen,” Roberts noted.
The Kaua‘i Challenge continues today with pool play starting at 8 a.m. at the Raiderdome.
