Haruo Matsunaga
Haruo Matsunaga of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on July 8, 2005, at the age of 89. He was born on April 28, 1916 on Kaua‘i and retired as a carpenter.
Survived by his wife, Hatsuyo and daughter, Susan Matsunaga both of Lihu‘e, brother, Mitsu Matsunaga, numerous nieces and nephews..
Services and inurnment were private.
Cremation and arrangements were handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Francis Shimabukuro, Sr.
Francis Shimabukuro, Sr. of Kapa‘a died July 21, 2005, at the age of 80.
Born June 14, 1925, on Hawai‘i, he was a supervisor for the County of Kaua‘i.
He is survived by two daughters: Anne (William) Ota and Glory Shimabukuro; three sons: Francis (Karla) Shimabukuro Jr., Jason (Wendy) Shimabukuro, and Shane (Raenell) Shimabukuro; one sister: Nancy “Mitchun” Tokuda; nine granddaughters: Keani, Kailie, Kaira, Jaylyne, Jaysie, Jaynna Shimabukuro, Sheene Ota and Kaysie Ota, and Ave Shimabukuro; and one grandson: Auston Ota; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Friday, July 29, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a, where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Gerald Francis Ito Sr.
Gerald Francis Ito Sr. of Kapa‘a, died on July 12, 2005, in Henderson, Nev., at the age of 61 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born June 26, 1944, on Kaua‘i, he was a self-employed general contractor.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marlene; four children, Gerald Ito Jr. of Kapa‘a, Chantell (Robert) Kaaihue of Nevada, Raenell (Shane Shimabukuro) Ito of Kapa‘a and Darnell Ito of Kapa‘a. Also surviving is his mother, Fusae Ito Ohara of Kapa‘a; four grandchildren, Amber, Klinton and Ashlyn Kaaihue, and Ave Shimabukuro, numerous aunts, nieces, nehpews and cousins.
Services will be held at First Hawaiian Church in Kapa‘a on Saturday, July 30, at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire and that flowers be omitted.
Jacquelyn Ann Canute
Jacquelyn Ann Canute of Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, formerly of Kaua‘i, died July 6, 2005, after a short illness at the Kaiser Medical Center at the age of 48.
Born in Albuquerque, N.M., she was a loan supervisor with Shell Vacatons Club.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Jafar “Jeff” Gollestani, and his children, Amy and Ali Gollestani; parents, A. Jack and Margaret Canute of O‘ahu; brothers, Thomas (Joy) Canute of Kaua‘i, Timothy (Deidre) Canute of Maui, Michael (Joyce Canute of O‘ahu; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private scattering of ashes was held on the Big Island. Arrangements were handled by Moanalua Mortuary.
Steven Vandervort
Steven Vandervort of Koloa, died July 20, 2005, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 45.
Born July 20, 1960, in Delaware, he was a cook.
He is survived by his wife: Paula Vandervort; one son: Max Vandervort; father: Dr. William Vandervort; mother: Barbra Vandervort; three brothers: Daniel Vandervort, Jeff (Julie) Vandervort and David Vandervort; one niece; three nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, at Hanapepe Veterans Pavilion, where services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Arnold Fernandez
Arnold Fernandez, part-time Kaua‘i resident, died July 12, 2005, at his family home in Reseda, Calif., at the age of 77.
Born Jan. 28, 1928, he loved to spend time on Kaua‘i with his daughter Arna Parr.He especially loved deep-sea fishing with his son-in-law, Norman Parr; enjoying golf with his grandson, Kevin Parr, and attending his youngest grandson, Matthew Parr’s football games.
He is survived by three daughters: Peggy (Paul) Templin of Reseda, Calif. Arna (Norman) Parr of Kaua‘i and Nita (Manuel) Townsend of Las Vegas and three grandsons.
His ashes will be scattered on Kaua‘i, along with his wife, Angie Fernandez and granddaughter, Gabrielle Parr, who preceded him in death.
