Edwin Parbo
Edwin Parbo of the Philippines and Kekaha, died June 22, 2005, in the Philippines at the age of 41.
Born Dec. 7, 1963, in the Philippines, he was employed by Kekaha Sugar Plantation.
He is survived by his wife: Melita C. Parbo; two daughters: Janice C. Parbo and Evelyn C. Parbo, both of Kekaha; one son: Albert C. Parbo of Kekaha; parents: Julio (Catalina) Parbo of Kekaha; one sister: Luzviminda P. Austria of Kekaha and one niece.
Family and friends may call on Friday, July 8, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, July 9, at St. Theresa’s Church from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Larry. Burial to follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Pablo Asuncion
Pablo Arcancel Asuncion of Koloa, died June 29, 2005, at Queen’s Hospital, at the age of 70.
Born Jan. 5, 1935, in Laoag City, Philippines, he worked as a Kaua‘i Sunshine Market vendor.
He is survived by his wife: Cora Asuncion; five sons: Gil Asuncion, Noel Asuncion, Ross Asuncion, Paul Asuncion and Randy Asuncion; two daughters: Ana Ko and Iris Asuncion; one brother: Benjamin Asuncion; three sisters: Brigida Racelo, Amerita Speasmaker, and Amelia Barber; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Church in Koloa, where Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Nap. burial to follow at St. Raphael’s Church Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Hideko Nii
Hideko Omoto Nii of Lihu‘e, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on July 1, 2005, at the age of 97.
Born in Kapa‘ia on May 20, 1908, she was predeceased by husband, Tsumoru Nii, co-owner of Nii’s Electric and later Nii’s Properties, Inc.
She is survived by two sons, Donald S. (Natalie) Nii of Illinois and Michael N. (Carolyn) Nii of Lihu‘e; daughter, Gladys Fujiuchi of Lihu‘e; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission; service officiated by Rev. Midori Kondo will begin at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Miguel Unciano
Miguel Unciano of Waimea, died June 25, 2005, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 82.
Born Aug. 25, 1922, in Magsingal Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a truck driver for Meadow Gold Dairies.
Preceded in death by his wife Lourdes Unciano, he is survived by hanai children: Davey Ancheta of Las Vegas, Brandon Ancheta of Waimea, Brende Ancheta of Kekaha, Kathy (Scott) Sorenson of Ewa Beach, Kimi (Curt) Cummings of Makawao, Pearlie (Mark) Humberstone of Kahului, Mary (Wenny) Rivera of Anahola, Cynthia (Ed) Taano of Colorado, John Ancheta of Texas, Bernie Carison of Washington, Patrick (Sherry) Ancheta of Makawao, Fran Souza of Waipahu, Sandra (Dwayn) Kim of Haiku, and Sylvia Akana of Wailua; two sisters: Martina Unciano and Fausta Unciano; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday, July 8, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa, where prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Scattering service will be held on Saturday, at 9 a.m. at Kekaha Beach across St. Theresa’s Church.

John Paul Turner
John Paul Turner died July 3, 2005, at the age of 94.
Born Sep. 11, 1911, in Kentucky, he was raised in Greensburg, Ind. A graduate of Butler University with Masters Degrees in Clinical Psychology and Business Administration, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth Wright in 1931. A veteran of WWII, he served with the Army Air Corps in Texas and with the head-quarters company of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower at Fontainbleu, France. Following the death of his first wife and while serving at the VA Hospital in Battlecreek, Mich. he met and married his wife of 52 years, Catherine Jackson in 1957. He founded the Family Service Association of Orange County in Tustin, Calif., and served as chairman of the Board until his retirement 20 years later. He moved to Kaua‘i in 1977 where he spent the remainder of his life as an avid world traveler and outspoken activist of the Democratic Party. He taught competitive diving to students at Waimea High School in the early 1980s; and was a member of both Waimea Foreign Church and Hanapepe UCC.
He is survived by daughter, Martha and sons, Scott and Steven, grandfather to Gina, Gayle, Chris, Nathan, Sara and Jessica, and great grandfather to Jayne and Julia. He has been a beneficiary of Kauai Hospice since February, 2005.
Hideo ‘Zip’ Miyazaki
Hideo “Zip” Miyazaki died at home on June 3, 2005, at the age of 89.
Nicknamed Zip because of his speed on the basepaths, he retired after a career as a carpenter for Lihue Plantation. He attained the position of “leader man” among crews working on challenging and often-dangerous back-country projects such as forming and building sluice-gates for reservoirs, aqueducts for canals, bridges for haulcane roadways, as well as more routine carpentry projects. He once noted that “when I started out I carried lumber for 2 years before they let me touch a saw or a hammer.” His co-workers were over-heard to have a saying: “When Zip is lead man, no more get trouble,” and he was renowned for his ability to sharpen a hand-saw,as well as a moi hook for when he got off work.
Predeceased by Betty, his wife of 60 years, Hideo is survived by his brother Yasuo; his son Melvin (Stephanie); his daughters, Elaine (Monty) Downs and Sharon (Donald) Ito; grandchildren Kevin Ito, Keri (Steve) Schmidt, Sean (Chesne) and Keith Kitamura; great grandchildren Cullen and Connor Kitamura; and numerous cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
A private service was held and arrangements were handled by Borthwick Mortuary.
