Kapa‘a High School’s Leilani Laranio, a force for the 2005 KIF JV basketball champions, continued her assault on the rest of the girls’ basketball world with a 20 point showing against Wailua II, yesterday in Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA) action at Kalaheo Gym.
Laranio led her 14 and under Wailua I squad to a 36-16 victory. Kaira Kupihea led her team with seven markers.
Sanoe Keli‘inoi, another young girls’ basketball performer on the rise, led Team Swish to a 26-15 win over the Westside Hornets. Keli‘inoi put up a game-high 11 points. Kierra Barba led the Hornets with 15 points.
Meanwhile, the boys took to the court in the Saturday finale, as Scott Taylor and Kekoa Prem scored 12 points each for C-Town, who trounced G-Unit, 65-13. Cody Valpoon had six in the loss.
On Thursday at Kalaheo Gym, the Hanamaulu Boyz danced around Kalaheo, 38-24 in 14 and under boys action. Paleku Yasay had the hot hand for Hanamaulu with nine points. Bransen Agu netted nine markers for Kalaheo.
Cody Abigania and his Wailua squad clipped the Waimea Rim Rockers, 32-22 in another 14 and under boys game. Abigania slipped in 15 points and Hino Kanahele notched 14 points for Waimea.
The third contest of the evening featured two westside squads and Waimea took it to their neighbors with a 43-11 victory over the Westside Hornets. Natalie Mata shot in 14 points for Waimea and Christina Banach led the Hornets with nine points.
