With the KIF champion-ships coming up on April 29, Kaua‘i’s state track and field qualifiers are starting to shape up.
Super Kaua‘i freshman Tiffany Ikeda-Simao, who could probably run on water, has the fifth best time in the 200-meter dash and the fifth best mark in the long jump when it comes to other qualifiers from around the state.
In addition, Ikeda-Simao has the eighth best time in the 100- meter dash in the state.
Waimea’s Kenny Estes also has impressive times in both the 100 and 200-meter races.
Compared to the rest of the state, Estes is pegged in at third in both dashes.
Another Menehune, Scott Martin, the long-distance specialist, is ninth in the state so far in the 1500-meter run.
Kapa‘a’s Joe Locey, the defending state champion in the 200 and 400-meter dashes is back, but the question will be if he can get up to 100 percent when the state meet comes around.
Locey is currently seventh in the 200 and 16th in the 400.
Last season, Locey set the state meet record in the 200.
Fellow Warrior, Jennifer Lindsey, the state’s defending high jump champion, is currently ranked #2 in that event.
Kaua‘i Jamilee Jimenez is finally getting the hang of the triple jump.
The freshman is ranked third in the state in that event.
Chelsea SmithWishard of Kaua‘i is progressing very well and is said to be ranked fifth in the state in the 1500 and the 3000.
But for Smith-Wishard, the number one spot is controlled by one of the best long-distance runners the state has to offer in HBA’s Lauren Ho.
However, according to her coach Richard Matsumoto, the number two spot is not out of the question for the Red Raider sophomore.
