The first round could be a distant memory for the Red Red Raiders with a loss against the Warriors in tonight’s battle at the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium. A win for the Warriors would eliminate Kaua‘i from first round contention and put them in full control going into the second round. However, the Menehune still have a chance at round one.
Kapa‘a has bullied both Waimea and Kaua‘i with convincing victories in head to head battles.
The Warriors, led by lone senior Samdi Makepa, control their own destinies with just two games to go in the first round.
A host of juniors and sophomores, led by the likes of Kennilyn Nakamura, Kieren Pond, April Johnson, and Poe Gantt have the Warriors and head coach Gary Kodani right where they want to be at this point of the season.
The defending champion Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders and head coach Dennis Aquino are feeling the blues after losing a host of talent from last year’s squad. However, with seniors Sheri Gebauer and Ulu Kelekoma, along with junior Rachel Taira at the helm, there always seems to be a way for Kaua‘i to be in any game.
Waimea, who is still in the first round hunt, has to find a way to keep its composure during crunch time.
The talented, but young squad has the makes to win this year, but maturity will be a huge factor for them throughout the 2005 season. The Menehune would like nothing better than a Kaua‘i win, which would even things up at the top and hand the Warriors their first loss of the season.
Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a battle at the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium, starting at 5:30 p.m. with JV action. The varsity game starts just 20 minutes following the completion of the JV contest.
