Hurley International’s NSSA Hawai‘i contest number eight was held at Pinetrees in Hanalei Bay. This last single point rated contest of the season provided great practice and preparation for all participants.
The NSSA Hawai‘i regional championships are scheduled for mid March, at the very same Pinetrees beachbreak. A northwest swell hit the sand-bars forming one to three foot rights and lefts with perfect off shore winds and wave surfaces. Saturday was a bit chilly but conditions warmed to everyone’s likings on Sunday, making it a great day at the beach.
Maui’s Clay Marzo jumped right back into the fray, after breaking an ankle earlier in the year. He scored two perfect tens, back to back in the open juniors final, showing all that he will be a force to be reckoned with later this month.
13-year-old Hizon Lin Kee from O‘ahu proved to most that age really doesn’t matter in the sport of surfing taking home second-place in the open juniors final, while also capturing sixthplace in the open men, and sixth place in the explorer men divisions.
Malia Manuel showed her local knowledge by waiting for the sets and sitting in the right spot making sure she rode them all the way to shore taking advantage of every open faced opportunities.
This earned her first-place in both the explorer girls 14-and-under and a first-place finish in the open women’s division.
Not only were we blessed with fun waves and relatively calm weather, we were also lucky to have Jamba Juice as the title sponsor for the week-end event, providing t-shirts, gift certificates, and of course their famous smoothies on the beach! The Jamba Ohana was a welcomed sight for both days.
NSSA-Hawai‘i conference director Bobbi Parker-Lee, Miko, her official staff, and all the judges are looking forward to returning to this same contest site, March 19 for the Hawai‘i Regional Championships when over 200 of the states finest surfers from Hilo to Hanalei vie for regional honors.
Credit for regionals are worth two and a half times the points earned this past week-end, making the upcoming event the most crucial contest of the season and all of Kaua‘i is invited to watch the competition as it unfolds along beautiful Hanalei Bay. Full results of the NSSA-Hawai‘i’s contest #8 can be found in the scoreboard on page B2.
