KALAHEO — Kelsey Cadiente came up with three straight buckets late in game one to pull Lihu‘e into the winner’s circle, 33-29 over the Waimea B&G Tuesday night as the county’s 12 and Under girls season came to an end.
Cadiente finished with a game-high 17 points in game two against the Westside Hornets, but the effort fell short, 33-23 as the Hornets balanced their scoring while keeping Lihu‘e outside the paint.
The elusive lead evaded Waimea throughout game one until late in the contest when Erin Connelly pulled the B&G to within a digit, 27-28, and drawing a foul on the bucket.
But, the tie never happened as Connelly’s charity point bounced harmless. A quick capitalizing on a turnover pulled Waimea into the lead for the first time only to have Cadiente answer for Lihu‘e with back-to-back buckets that surged the Lihu‘e whiteshirts into the winner’s circle.
“We had ‘em,” one of the Waimea coaches said following their effort. “But, Kelsey is too fast. We put Jaymie on her, but when she came up with two baskets, and Jaymie’s three-pointer didn’t sink…”
Cadiente notched a game-high 21 points in Lihu‘e’s win with Katrina Dreier adding seven, and Sierra Mayer finishing with six points.
Connelly topped the Waimea scoring with ten points followed by Sanida Pahulehua adding six. Jaymie Jacinto and Brandee Victorino each chipped in four while Rose Palma and Selina Lutao each finished with a pair. A digit from Vakeesha Lagazo accounted for the Waimea math.
The three-way combination of Christina Banach, Charlene Ortiz, and Tanisha DeFabian kept Lihu‘e out of the paint in game two, while Banach and DeFabian led the Hornets’ scoring production with 11 and 16 points respectively.
Ortiz, who suffered an ankle injury midway through the contest finished with a pair while Brandi Briones rounded out the effort with four points in the Westside Hornets’ win.
In addition to Cadiente’s 17-point game two, Lihu‘e got help from Jasmin Mariano and Dreier who each finished with a pair, and Codi-Rei Pezario helping out with a digit.
With the close of the 12 and Under girls program, Clyde Vito, one of the program officials said that the county’s 14 and Under boys program will continue until close to the end of March.
In the meantime, the Boys & Girls’ Termite program is slated to begin, and when that’s over, the KYBA summer program should just about be ready to tip off.
Brothers Elijah and Urijah Phillips combined for 23 points in the 57-17 romp over Kilauea. Jeff Garcia and Tommy Patch combined for 13 in the loss on Monday in the County’s Winter Basketball boys 14-and-under league at Kilauea Gym.
In a close one, Wailua 2 beat Lihue “S” 29-28. Kelvin Villanueva led Wailua with 16 points. Chad Koga and Tella Huni put up seven points each for Lihu‘e.
Justin Tanicala and Sam Thronas threw up 13 and 11 points each for the 48-28 win over the Lihu‘e Lakers. Jordan Tottori led Lihu‘e with 14 points.
Last week Thursday, Waimea B&G Club edged the Pacers 22-18 in girls 12-and-under action. Jaymie Jacinto paced Waimea with seven. Janessa Grady had nine in the loss. Christina Banach’s 12 points led the Westside Hornets to the 34-20 win over Kalaheo. Shelly Koerte led Kalaheo with 12.
