Jim Thain
Jim Thain, builder, innovator, pioneer in the building trade, passed away January 25, 2005.
He paved his way into construction as a laborer for Henry Kaiser on the Kaimuki portion of the Mauka Arterial in 1964, then operated and maintained the Islands’ first and only concrete pump for Mars Constructors. At Charles Pankow Builders, he was a leader on the team that perfected the ‘slip form’ technique, erecting one floor of a high rise every two days, first executed at Hobron Lane.
Jim made his mark in the hearts of men during his participation and supervision in the construction of almost every major structure in Hawai‘i, statewide, since 1965. His mentoring and wonderful wit brought camaraderie to each work site.
His strength and integrity are legendary. His friendship spanned trades and cultures.
Born and raised on Kaua‘i, graduated from Punahou in 1957, Jim leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Susan Folk Thain, daughters Kirsten D. Thain and Cheyne Martinez, sons James D. Thain, III and Justin L.Thain, caregiver Lisiate Heimuli, brother Ian Thain, sister Moira Hand, 12 grandchildren, and a myriad of friends.
Services and a celebration of life to be held at Ko’olau Golf Club, 9:30 a.m., February 5, 2005. Honorarium 10 a.m. Celebration 11:30 a.m. till pau.
Jose Galicinao
Jose Nacapuy Galicinao of Kaumakani, died Jan. 28, 2005, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 93.
Born March 4, 1911, in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a knapsack sprayer for Olokele Sugar Plantation.
He is survived by his wife: Felicidad Rivera Galicinao of Kaumakani; three sons: Joseph Baxa of Lawa‘i, Albert (Judy) Baxa of West Covina, Calif., and Richard (Susan) Galicinao of Kaumakani; two daughters: Gloria (Ben) Ordinario of Renton, Wash., and Nancy Galicinao of Lake Forest, Calif.; three grandchildren: Gloryann Ordinario, Chanson Ordinario and Shamara Duhaylongsod and two great grandchildren: Mapuana Duhaylongsod and Keoni Silva.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Kaumakani Methodist Church where services will be held at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Faustino Patricio Sr.
Faustino “Pat” Patricio Sr. of Kekaha died at his home on Jan. 24, 2005, at the age of 85.
Born in Kapa‘a on Oct. 29, 1919, he served as a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He retired as a supervisor from the Kekaha Sugar Co. and also was a school bus driver for Akita Enterprises.
He coached youth football and baseball as well as refereed and umpired, respectively. He loved playing senior softball and was a member of the first team from Hawai‘i to ever win the World Series (75andover division.)
He is survived by his wife Estrellita C. “Esther” Patricio; four sons Fred (Julie) Patricio of Kekaha, Danny (Carmelita) Patricio of Kaumakani; Noel (Joni) Patricio of Lawa‘i and Nelson Patricio of Georgia; daughter: Amorita Jones of O‘ahu; brother: William (Shirley) Mande of Hanama‘ulu; sisters: Gladys Padre and Crispina (Dick) Laranio, both of Kapahi; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Faustino “Paos” Patricio Jr.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Kauai Veterans’ Cemetery with service and burial to follow. Casual attire is suggested.
Kiwako Emura
Kiwako Emura of Kekaha, died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on Jan. 27, 2005, at the age of 78.
Born in Kekaha on July 20, 1926, she was a retired finance clerk with the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
She is survived by a brother, Henry Y. Emura, of Kekaha; five sisters, Hisami Emura Higa of Kekaha, Chitose Emura (Raymond) Ichiki of ‘Aiea, O‘ahu, Ruby Emura Doi of Waimea, June Emura (Ray) Kimata of ‘Aiea, O‘ahu and Betsy Ann Emura (Wallace) Hill of Dallas, Ore. Services were private.
Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Crescencia Lopez
Crescencia Pongasi Lopez of Lihu‘e, died at Queen’s Hospital on Jan. 27, 2005, at the age of 82.
Born May 14, 1922, in Bohol Islands, Cebu, Philippines, she was a homemaker and a devout Roman Catholic.
Preceded in death by her daughter, Hazel Rellin, brother, Jerry Pongasi and stepson Allan Lopez, she is survived by her husband, Frederico Lopez Sr.; seven daughters: April J. Rellin of Maryland, Martha (Dennis) Kaminski of Illinois, Dolores (William) Barry of Alaska, Annie Rellin of Puhi, Sheila (Ralph) Schmarje of Arizona, Carmela Cabacungan of Lihu‘e, and Novella (Lawrence) Laranio of Waimea; two sons: Timothy Laranio of Anahola and Wayne (Leilani) Laranio of Kapa‘a; stepdaughter: Kathleen Christian; four stepsons: Ali Birtadaso, Garrick Lopez, Ronald (Jeanette) Lopez and Joe (Lihue) Lopez, 18+ grandchildren, 14+ greatgrandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kapaia at 8:30 a.m. Services at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
Aloha attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
