Kokua at the beach
We would like to publicly express our thanks to Police Officer Scribner, and Tutu Palama’s fine grandsons Koa, Keanu & Landon, for their help with an incident last month. I took friends visiting us from the Mainland snorkeling at the Lawai Beach Park area. Unfortunately, once we were in the water, the bag we left on the beach near numerous tourists was taken by a couple in a white “junkalunka car” (Palama boys description wonderful!) The boys took the initiative to come over and were so kind and helpful that our friends could not get over it. We were lucky that there were no wallets or cash in the bag, however my car keys were, so we were stranded for a bit.
Then later that night we received a call from the police that the bag had been recovered thanks to the Ida family in Lawai finding it along side the road. Not only did they take the time to contact police, they also made numerous phone calls to local lodging in & around the Lawa‘i area trying to locate our friends from airline itineraries contained in the bag!
Thank you again for reminding us why we love Kaua‘i, and Mahalo to all for the warm Aloha shown our guests!

Kapa‘a Traffic Jammed
Let see how the state and county planning departments will jam up traffic more in Kapa‘a.
1. Put in a new resort at Waipouli
2. Open another resort at Hau‘ola (Wailua light) i.e. Coco Palms Hotel
3. Put in (not needed) by pass extension at Olahena Road
4. A new bridge (with no auxiliary temporary bridge) on Olahena Road
5. Add more traffic lights
6. More constructions projects at north end of Kapa‘a
7. Six unneeded soccer fields at Lydgate Park Area. Etc., etc., etc.
All this in the name of development. We think not!

Thank You Kaua‘i!
A 36 hour adventure. We have a condo in Po‘ipu and my sister is here visiting us on a vacation.. Around dinner time as she was starting a jig saw puzzle, she complained of an upper back shoulder pain and a tightness in her throat. She said, “I don’t feel like eating. I am going to lie down.”
Well, I felt a blood pressure test might tell us something. Our home machine registered very high. Not feeling good about my ability to make a judgment I suggested a routine trip to the local fire station on Po‘ipu Road for a verification test. The firemen at the station were doing the evening dishes, but invited us in and immediately took my sister’s blood pressure. Quick to point out we better go to the neighboring ambulance service for a further check. The guys were terrific and sent us on our way to Wilcox Hospital.
Arriving at the emergency room we were readily admitted and the service at the hospital couldn’t have been more caring, they made us feel that they knew what they were doing. Dr. Downs was our Emergency Doctor and started the tests and informed my sister we really made the right decision coming in now! Judy, the RN, made us feel so comfortable under the circumstances. Dr. Cementi (sp), the internal physician, consulted with my sister and said “were going to put you in ICU and then Medevac you to Straub Hospital in Honolulu.” Well, if my sister’s blood pressure wasn’t high enough it moved up the chart even higher. In the morning an early call to inform my wife and me that my sister would be on a Medevac plane at 8 a.m. in the morning. The ambulance service people were fantastic here on Kaua‘i. My wife accompanied my sister and off they went to Honolulu in a small plane.
Once arriving at Straub Hospital the extra effort by Wilcox Hospital in making all the arrangements made everything go quite smoothly since in fact my sister had a heart attack and right speedy action had been taken.
I picked my wife and sister up as they returned on a commercial air flight to Lihu‘e airport. Very excited to see she was in great health, I said, “Lunch on me let’s go to J.J.s.” As we were discussing the preceding 36hour affair, who walks over to our table but our emergency doctor from Wilcox, Dr. Downs. Astonishment on his face he said, “Aren’t you the woman I saw in Emergency Room? Wow, so glad to see you and you look great after your heart attack.”
The aloha hospitality is real! The best of care, help and friendliness by everyone from the firehouse, ambulance service, and the hospitals. Thank you Kaua‘i for having the spirit. My sister’s final comment, “Could you please bill me after May? I’ll be 65 in May and Medicare will be responsible.”
