A man attempting to cross ‘Umi Street in Lihu‘e around 8 p.m. Sunday night is in Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu after being struck by a car.
The man, who has not been identified, was struck by a small Toyota sedan as he crossed ‘Umi Street near the former County Building Annex next to the Historic County Building, attorney and witness Mark Zenger said yesterday.
Zenger said he was leaving his law office across ‘Umi Street, and saw the entire accident.
The man smashed the windshield and flew almost eight feet over the top of the car before landing in the middle of the road, Zenger said.
And the driver, whom he described as a woman probably in her late twenties, continued towards Rice Street, Zenger added.
“There was no braking at any point,” he continued.
After running into ‘Umi Street, screaming for the woman to stop and yelling at her that he got her license plate anyway, Zenger said the driver stopped the vehicle within 20 feet of the intersection of Rice and ‘Umi streets.
After passersby stayed with the woman, Zenger went to the victim, who apparently had a broken leg and was unconscious.
“I just happened to be walking out to my girlfriend’s car,” Zenger continued, adding that it was like something straight out of Hollywood.
According to the police scanner, the man was unresponsive to any stimulation, but had a heartbeat.
Police had no information on his condition as of last night, said Cyndi Mei Ozaki, county public information officer.
The investigation is continuing, and no arrests have been made, Ozaki added.
