Two weeks after coming off KSA’s Fall Season, eight teams from Kaua‘i participated in the 2004 Mililani 7-A-Side Tournament recently on O‘ahu. Each team played three games in their respective pools with Kaua‘i teams showing great results, to qualify for the semi-finals Sunday. When the dust had settled, Kaua‘i teams emerged with two gold medals and a pair of silver medals.
Bringing home the championship title and medals were BU-14 Motiv-8 coached by Todd Fuerte and Peter Sarsona, this team going undefeated with 8-2 vs MSC Strikers ‘92, 7-2 against MSC Strikers ‘91, and winning HSC Bulls to place them in semi-finals against Real with a 7-1 score. Facing Powder Edge, Motiv-8 easily went on to take the title 5-1.
Gold medals around their necks, coaches Kevin Gusman and Bobbie Rapozo were more than pleased with their GU-12 Motiv-8 team. With a 2-0 win against Leeward SC Twisters and tying MSC Strikers ‘93 and Honolulu Blazers 1-1, they ended up first in their pool and the division champions.
Second place medals were awarded to GU-14 KSC-East coached by Kevin Devitt, Ed Taylor and Karl Ubongen. KSC-East took on HSC Bulls ‘92 Ka‘ele 7-2, Real 4-0 and tied Ho‘okalakapua 2-2. They advanced to the championship game by beating HSC Bulls 4-0 in the semi-finals to play the final game against Ho‘okalakapua, 2-4.
Another silver medal winner, BU-10 Lihue Cougars, won their games against HSC Bulls ‘95 Ka‘ula and North Shore Fireballs 1-0 and tying Oaks 1-1. In the semi-finals, the Cougars faced the Twisters, emerging with a 3-2 win. Coaches Jeff Mendez and Victor Nemeth brought the Cougars to the most exciting championship game against Riggers which went into double overtime and losing in the shootout.
Wayne Taniguchi and Kevin Gusman’s GU-14 Motiv-8 team also had impressive games this weekend. Beating MSC Strikers ‘91 with a 2-0 score, HSC Bulls ‘92 Ka‘ele 4-2 and tying Da Mana 1-1, they faced Ho‘okalakapua in the semis, 0-8.
Westside United BU-ll coached by Scott Fisher and Kenny Chicoine also fell in the semi’s against Strikers 0-2, but played their earlier games against Real 3-2, WSC Volcanoes 2-0 and PC Strikers 0-3 to qualify to play in the semi-finals.
Also participating, Shari Shimabukuro’s GU-13 Chicks Who Rip and the Motiv-8 BU-12 team coached by Gary Hudson and Curtis Langstaff. Chicks Who Rip won 3-2 against MSC Strikers ‘92 and lost to Real ‘92 1-7 and HSC Bulls 2-3. Motiv-8 BU-12’s did not qualify for the semi’s, but played good games with wins against Wizards 4-0, HSC Bulls 2-0, losing to MSC Strikers Premier 1-3.
Commissioner Kevin Devitt encourages more teams to register for KSA’s Fall 7-A-Side season and move on to enter next year’s Mililani 7-A-Side Tournament.
All eight teams represented Kaua‘i well with impressive and exciting games.
