The Charity Bowl games marked the end of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner season , with West hosting East at Hanapepe Stadium recently.
The first game of the day was played under cloudy skies and a windy day.
The Junior Pee Wee East team consisted of the Northshore Na Ali‘i and Kapa‘a Eagles teams, with the Lihu‘e Patriots off-island playing a team from Waimanalo.
East took a 6-0 lead on a run by Waika Alapai in the second quarter, with a failed conversion on the PAT.
That provided the difference as both teams got into a slugfest for the remainder of the ball game with the teams going between the 30 yard lines, but not being successful in converting or scoring.
One of the most exciting plays of the game, a sixty-five yard blast by Leevei Bethel, was called back on a penalty. Leevei broke free and took of for the end zone. Although the score did not count, Leevei had a great run, the last big play for him and that ended his season on a high note.
The next contest was between the East side midget teams which consisted of the Northshore Na Ali‘i and the Kapa‘a Eagles, and the West squad which consisted of the Koloa Raiders, the Hanapepe Colts and the Kekaha Chargers.
The scoring for this game started with 7:12 on the clock in the second quarter of play when Kekaha’s Justin Halog ripped off a 35 yard run for the West’s first score. The PAT failed, leaving the West up, 6-0.
East came back with 8:16 left in the third quarter. The East’s Joe Boy Enrique scored on a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryston Rapozo. The PAT by Joe Boy Enrique was good, giving East an 8-6 lead.
But West wasn’t done.
With 3:21 left in the third quarter, Kawika Holi-Kunishige of the Koloa Raiders took a hand-off and scampered 86 yards and the score.
With the converted PAT by Kekaha’s Jayrald Watanabe, West took the lead 14-8.
For the next quarter of play the ball exchanged hands on punts and downs. Both teams threatened on several occasions, but failed to convert for the score.
After the contest, awards were given out to the winning teams in each of the divisions. The Junior Pee Wees saw the Koloa Packers take the first place trophy and co-champions for second place between the Kapa‘a Eagles and the Hanapepe Colts.
In the Pee Wee Division, the Lihu‘e Patriots took first place with and undefeated season. Second place honors went to the Koloa “Westside” Rams.
