WAILUA — Wakeboarders from all across the globe invaded the waters of Wailua River yesterday, as the 2004 Tige U.S. Open Wakeboard Championships kicked off. The action continues tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the Jr. men’s second round. The pro men’s semifinals second round follows, then at 12:45 p.m., the pro women hit the water for second round action. The day ends with a pro men’s head to head round at 1:45 p.m. The riders are competing for a piece of the $25,000 in cash.
Yesterday featured the first rounds of competition for the jr. men, pro men, and pro women.
In the jr. men’s division, Jeff House (58.35), Rob Jacques (54.45), Danny Thollander (51.70), and Kristian Kastari (46.63) all advanced to the second round.
Shane Bonifay (72.22) and Darin Shapiro (67.22) advanced to the semifinals in heat one of the pro men’s division. Rusty Malinoski (75.57) and Keith Layman (73.37) were the top two to advance to the semis from heat number two.
In heat three, Trevor Hansen (84.43) and Keith Lidberg (67.78) made it into the next round.
Andrew Adkison (73.90) and Chris Law (68.88) both came up big in heat four and advanced to the semifinals.
In the pro women’s competition, Barrett Perlman, Jenacee Jackson, Leslie Kent, Amber Wing, Cathy Williams, Melissa Marquardt, Lauren Loe, Emily Copeland-Durham, and Dallas Friday advanced to the second round.
