Kaua‘i shooters head to states

The 2004 HHSAA/Civilian Marksmanship Program boys and girls state air riflery competitors representing the KIF were named recently with the boys fielding seven shooters and two alternates and girls with seven shooters as well, but one alternate.
The competition will be held at the Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on O‘ahu at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2 (yes, on General Election Day).
Representing the KIF boys squad are Waimea’s Chris Aguilar (junior), Brian Martin (junior), and Kori Sakahashi (senior), and Kaua‘i’s Kendall Kusaka (junior), Brandan Nakamoto (senior), Dustin Russell (senior), and Marc Shibata (senior). Kaua‘i’s Aaron Braun (sophomore) and Garon Nobriga (senior) are the alternates.
Representing the girls team are Waimea’s Sheila Ramos (junior), Mitzi Seto (senior), Ashley Shimono (senior), Sharla Shimono (junior), and Lynell Wright (junior), along with Kaua‘i’s Terra Bell (senior) and Ka‘iulani Sheldon (senior). Waimea’s Jenni Ueno (junior) is the lone alternate.
Hawai‘i’s riflery championship is one of two in the United States that is sanctioned by a high school association. The other one is in Georgia, which has co-ed championships.
The St. Louis boys are the defending state champs and Sacred Hearts is the defending state champions for the girls.
Surprising free agents
NEW YORK — Los Angeles third baseman Adrian Beltre, who led the major leagues with 48 home runs, was among 65 players who filed for free agency on the first possible day, just hours after Boston completed its historic sweep of St. Louis in the World Series.
Also filing were Houston outfielder Carlos Beltran ,Toronto first baseman Carlos Delgado, Chicago White Sox outfielder Magglio Ordonez, Minnesota right-hander Brad Radke and Florida right-hander Carl Pavano.
While the Red Sox have 17 players potentially eligible for free agency, including Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Jason Varitek and Orlando Cabrera, backup outfielder Gabe Kapler was the only player to file.
Sluman shoots course record
PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Jeff Sluman shot a course-record 62 for a two-shot lead in the Chrysler Championship.
Jonathan Kaye made a hole-in-one with a 3-iron from 222 yards on 17, then followed that with a birdie for a 7-under 64. He was tied with Kirk Triplett and Kent Jones.
Vijay Singh made five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the back nine for a 65.
UH beats Boise State in women’s volleyball
BOISE, Idaho — Victoria Prince recorded 20 kills and Susie Boogaard added 15 as the Hawaii women’s volleyball team remained unbeaten on the season with a four-game victory over Boise State on Friday.
The Rainbow Wahine (20-0, 10-0 Western Athletic Conference) won 26-30, 33-31, 30-18, 30-25, in their second game without coach Dave Shoji, who remained in Honolulu for the team’s current two-game road trip to be with his ailing father.
Alicia Arnott had 13 kills and Tara Hittle added 10. Ashley Watanabe led the defense with 22 digs.
Cameron Flunder and Heather Malashak each recorded 12 kills for the Broncos (16-8, 5-5). Kim Fenneman had 10 kills, while Jamie Claussen and Telia Peterson helped out with 16 digs apiece on defense.
Redskins’ Taylor arrested
ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Redskins rookie Sean Taylor was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and refusing a breathalyzer test.
Taylor, No. 5 overall draft pick, was pulled over by a Virginia state trooper at about 2:45 a.m. EDT, on Washington’s Interstate 495 beltway. The officer suspected Taylor had been drinking, and Taylor then flunked some field sobriety tests, according to Virginia State Police Lt. Harry Newlin. The team released a one-sentence statement announcing the 21-year-old safety would be inactive for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.
Dotson ruled incompetent
WACO, Texas — The former Baylor basketball player charged with murdering a teammate was ruled incompetent to stand trial.
Carlton Dotson, 22, was sent by District Judge George Allen to a state mental hospital for up to four months, after which his competence will be evaluated again.
Dotson could get life in prison if convicted of shooting Patrick Dennehy, who was missing for about six weeks before his body was found in 2003 in a field near Baylor’s Waco campus.
Tour de France route unveiled
PARIS — The 2005 Tour de France may give other riders their best chance to test Lance Armstrong, if he goes for a seventh straight title. Organizers unveiled the 2005 Tour route, which runs from July 2-24, passes through Germany and features 21 stages over 2,222 miles.
