PUHI — In his own estimation, UH-Hilo baseball coach Joey Estrella wasn’t much of a hitter, instead he was “all field,” speaking of his great defensive prowess on the diamond.
Ironically, the Vulcan diamond boss got to lend some of his expertise in hitting, along with pitching to Kaua‘i baseball coaches.
Estrella, along with UH women’s basketball coach Jim Bolla, UH softball assistant coach Dee Wieneski, UH women’s tracks assistant coach Garrett Collier, and former UH cheerleaders Kellie Mikami and Tina Kuribayashi joined KIF coaches, as well as other coaches from around the state at the 2nd Annual KIF Coaches Clinic and Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Training held Saturday at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.
The one-day event began at 8 a.m., with the purpose of promoting unity and cooperation between all of the member high schools. Three areas were addressed: the professional development of coaches and parents, the development of positive community relations for the KIF, and the need to address Kaua‘i’s growing drug problem that has become at high priority in our community.
Presenters from successful high school and collegiate levels provided information related to improve coaching strategies and skill development.
The workshop for the DAT program provided coaches, parents, and student-athletes with the opportunity of participating in the DAT curriculum and lessons as a resource for drug prevention and awareness in sports and at home/community.
The DAT trainers from O‘ahu were Richard Haru, Beth Davidann, and Cindy Jennes, who are all from Castle.
Baseball presenters included, Estrella, Eric Kadooka from Punahou, Dunn Muramaru of Mid-Pacific, Mike Moss, former BYU standout and Punahou coach. Bobby Awa of Konawaena joined Bolla, as presenters for girls basketball. Sam Moku of Kamehameha and Earl Hedani of Iolani joined Collier for boys and girls track. Cheerleading presenters included, Lawrence Frank and Thomas Luna, both of Radford. Joining Wieneski on the softball panel were Anthony Saffery of Kapolei and Bernard Victor of Kailua.
This program was made possible by three grants, a Fedreal Safe and Drug Free Grant, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Grant, and a Drug Coalition Grant. Also, sponsors included the Department of Education, the KIF, Roy Nishida, Kaua‘i County Anti-Drug Coordinator, and the Radisson Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
