HANAPEPE — While the field remained soggy, the Kapa‘a Warriors JV squad dried it out with crisp passing and timely runs for a 22-0 win over the Waimea Menehune JV squad.
Kapa‘a’s defense also stopped the Menehune surge during critical times.
In the first quarter, the Warriors scored with 8:25 on the clock, as Cody Salausa crossed the goal line on a 9-yard scamper. A Chavis Kupihea run gave the Warriors the two-point conversion for a 8-0 lead.
Kapa‘a struck again just about two minutes later, but this time through the air, as Kupihea connected with Kahai Nakano for a 29-yard TD play. Salausa’s PAT made the score 15-0 in favor of the Warriors.
Both teams were unable to put points up on the scoreboard in the second quarter, so the score remained 15-0.
A 25-yard FG attempt sailed right, off of the foot of Kaimana Girod. Then, Waimea’s Bryson Vea recovered a Kapa‘a fumble, but the Menehune turned it over on downs with 22 seconds to go in the half.
The fireworks in the third started early, in fact, at the very first play of the period, as Kapa‘a’s Albert Aguilar took the kick-off 78 yards for the touchdown, which gave the Warriors a 22-0 lead, thanks to Salausa’s second PAT.
That score would be the only one of the third quarter, as both defenses clamped down.
With 8:50 to go in the game, the Menehune defense came up big with a goal line stop on four downs.
After that, both teams were unable to hold on to the ball, as the story of the fourth quarter was full with fumbles. The Warriors went on to win the game, 22-0.
KIF football action continues next Friday at Vidinha with Kaua‘i High School and Kapa‘a battling it out.
The JV contest starts it off at 5 p.m. with varsity action kicking off at 7:35 p.m.
