More beach sand
Mayor Bryan Baptiste and the Public Works Department are working towards bringing 5,000 cubic yards of sand into Poipu Beach Park to mitigate erosion problems that have occurred along this section of coastline over the past two years. If all goes according to plan, the sand will be brought in starting in October. PBRA hopes to coordinate this effort with continued sand replenishment at Brennecke’s Beach
Rotary honors
Lani Kawahara received the Rotary Vocational Award for Exceptional Public Service at a ceremony to honor her contributions in the development of the library at Princeville. Each week the speaker at the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay is recognized by the donation of a book to the Princeville Public Library with their name as donee and signed by the speaker. Along with her job as head librarian, Lani purchases books that are needed at the library with funds donated to the Rotary Club for this purpose.
Jeffrey M. Murata, manager of the Princeville Branch of the First Hawaiian Bank, has been recognized by being invited to membership in the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay. Jeffrey lives in Wailua Homestead with his wife, Colyne, and his 10 month old daughter, Dana. Jeffrey has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1996. Since that time he has been a real estate loan analyst, a credit analyst, a customer service representative, a business banking service representative, a business banking officer, and he is now the Branch Manager.
Young Bros. promotion
Young Brothers, Ltd. has hired Vicente “Vic” Salas Angoco, Jr. as vice president of marketing and sales. He is responsible for the overall management, growth, service, and performance of the marketing and sales department. His responsibilities will be to develop accurate revenue forecasts, develop marketing and sales strategies, create an efficient management team and loyal work force, analyze customer needs, and formulate methods to maintain and expand the customer base.
Before joining Young Brothers, Ltd., Angoco worked for Matson Navigation Company, Inc. for eight years, gaining experience as Container Operations Manager in Honolulu, Eastern Sales Area Manager in San Francisco, and Sales and Customer Service Manager on Guam. His background also includes serving as Operations Manager and Logistics Manager for American President Lines, Ltd. and Operations Manager and Marine Coordinator for Sea-Land Services, Inc. (now known as Horizon Lines). Originally from Guam, Angoco earned a degree in business management from Oregon State University.
Airline news
Fall Drop Off: Aloha, American and United Airlines will all discontinue one daily flight to Kaua‘i after Labor Day. United’s evening San Francisco departure will be scheduled only on Saturdays. Their mid-day departure to SFO and evening departure to LAX will remain in place. Aloha’s daily Oakland service will discontinue. American’s afternoon departure to LAX will also be discontinued, but their evening departure will remain in place.
More service to Reno: Aloha Airlines is adding a second daily HNL -Reno flight via Burbank. The existing service flies through Orange County. Flights will arrive in Reno at 11:10 p.m. and leave in the morning from Reno at 7:10 a.m. The new service will launch December 15th.
New Canadian Service: Beginning November 12th, Vancouver-based Harmony Airways will expand its winter schedule with more flights between Canada and Hawaii. This new service will include nonstop flights to Honolulu from Victoria and Toronto in addition to their Vancouver flights.
Poipu Beach Hotel
Following approval by the Kaua‘i County Planning Commission of the Poipu Beach Hotel’s SMA permit and variance applications, the hotel owner, CTF, has indicated their desire to move full speed ahead on re-construction. According to their representative, Mike Belles, the owner would like to see the property re-opened by 2006. A management company has not yet been named. The hotel design is similar to the former property with 121 rooms, full-service restaurant, pool and jacuzzi.
Sports tourism
Calling all Kaua‘i sports enthusiasts and entrepreneurs! The Hawai Tourism Authority is seeking “request for proposals” pertaining to travel for Health & Wellness, according to Rex Johnson of the HTA. Deadline for submitting proposals is 4:30 p.m., Oct. 4. The state tourism agency wants to find ways to implement its new strategy to beef up the sports industry here, and local residents are being asked for their imput. Ultimately, the input will be used to get a better understanding of the size and potential of this market. Beginning Sept. 7, the application and information packet will be available on the HTA’s website at www.hawaii.gov/tourism.
Internet Expo
RoadRunner High Speed Online is hosting the 2004 Technology & Internet Expo, which will be held at the Radisson Kaua`i Beach Resort on Sept. 21, from 12 – 6 p.m. This Technology & Internet Expo provides a unique showcase for high technology companies and organizations to present their latest products, services, and innovations through exhibits. Kahi Lani changes management
Castle Resorts & Hotels confirmed today a management agreement with the Kaha Lani Resort on Kaua‘i, beginning Oct. 1, 2004. Castle will fully manage the resort and handle all sales and marketing, operations and reservations, according to Alan Mattson, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Castle Resorts & Hotels. This will bring the total number of Castle Resort properties on the island of Kaua‘i to six. Kaha Lani joins the Kiahuna Plantation & Beach Bungalows, Poipu Shores, Makahuena at Poipu, Lanikai Resort and Lae Nani Resort. Including the acquisition of Kaha Lani, Castle Resorts & Hotels has 19 properties throughout the Hawaiian Islands, including Oahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, Molokai and the Big Island.
