LIHU‘E — Friday night high school football is back, with the voice of Harold Naumu, the sounds of the bands, and the let’s not forget the exciting action on the field. Kapa‘a High School got the first taste last night at Vidinha Stadium against Waialua High School and took them out, 13-7. Both teams couldn’t erase the goose eggs from the scoreboard during the first quarter, but the fireworks started in the second, when Kapa‘a’s Lot Sarsona exploded through middle for an 18 yard TD run, along with a Russell Morita PAT, to put the Warriors up 7-0. Waialua struck back thirty seconds later with a 30-yard TD strike to Mark Langaman to tie the contest at 7 a piece at the half. Kapa‘a broke the tie with just over five minutes to go in the third off of Chris Baltazar 11-yard scamper to give the Warriors a 13-7 advantage, as Morita failed to convert the PAT. Waialua failed to break through in the fourth, as the Kapa‘a’s defense stiffened and kept the game in their hands, with a 13-7 win. In the jv contest, Waialua dominated from start to finish with a 28-7 win. However, Kapa‘a drew first blood with a 77-yard kick-off return TD via Travis Nakamura, along with a successful PAT from Coty Salausa to put the Warriors up 7-0. The Bulldogs struck back with a safety and two unanswered TD’s from the legs of Edwin Rubio and a pass from Justin Whittaker to Donavan Matas with a converted PAT, to give Waialua a 15-7 lead at the half. The O‘ahu team continued to reign supreme in the second half with another TD pass from Whittaker to Rubio and a 36-yard run by Devin Agaran with a Kaikala Carvalho PAT that made the final score, 28-7.
Waimea faces Hawai‘i Prep tonight, 7:35 at Hanapepe Stadium. Meanwhile, Kaua‘i takes on Punahou on O‘ahu.
