KALAHEO — As the final buzzer sounded in the second overtime, it was sad to see that there was a winner and a loser, as Ikaika Basketball of O‘ahu and the Westside Hornets gave the packed crowd at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, something to remember.
Although Ikaika came out on top, 32-28, the Hornets definitely showed that they could run with the much tougher Kaimuki squad.
Things looked good for Westside at the half, as they held the advantage, 14-10. Ikaika, though, scooted ahead with a 6-0 run to go up, 18-14 in the third.
Brittany Yadao-Lanning and Kierra Barba put up a bucket a piece to narrow to lead, but Ikaika surged ahead again and went up 23-18 with 2:30 to go in the fourth. Westside’s Natalie Mata and Yadao-Lanning, along with a Barba drive, tied the game up at 23 a piece with just 45 ticks in the final frame.
Ikaika ran the clock down, but was unable to put up the winning basket, but they grabbed the early lead in the first overtime, 26-23.
Hornets bomber, Mata connected from long-distance to tie the game up with just under a minute to go. Again Ikaika got the last possession, but came up empty. Sherry Kua, one of the two post players from the Hornets hobbled off the floor with an injury, which put a damper on the Hornets’ scheme.
After going up by two in the second OT, Barba came back with a runner to tie it up, but another Hornet set back slowed down their efforts, as Yadao-Lanning fouled out.
Ikaika was able to take control and won the game at the line, with crucial charity stripe successes, for the 32-28 championship win.
Megan Kamehiro led Ikaika with 14 markers and Kierra Barba paced Westside with eight points. Tournament MVP’s were: Kalama’s (Maui) Anuhea Rilveria, Kaua‘i Fire Raiders’ Sanoe Keli‘inoi, Kilauea Hui’s Kieren Pond, Kaumakani Supersonics’ Sera Pascual, Wailua’s Jondi Das, Westside Hornets’ Kierra Barba, and Ikaika Basketball’s Megan Kamehiro and Lori Yamashita.
