UH’s Shoji gives the nod to contract
By The Garden Island
Head coach of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team, Dave Shoji gave the green light to a five year contract that goes back to 2003 and would take him through the 2008 campaign.
The UH Board of Regents have yet to approve the deal that would make Shoji one of the highest paid coaches in the WAC.
Tickets (single game) for the upcoming season go on sale August 23. The season starts with the Hawaiian Airlines Classic, September 2-5.
Charge dropped against Kahumoku
HONOLULU — A misdemeanor assault charge against former University of Hawai‘i volleyball star Lily Kahumoku was dismissed because her then-boyfriend, the alleged victim, failed to show up in court. District Judge Barbara Richardson on Thursday gave the state 10 days to contact Hawai‘i men’s volleyball player Jose Delgado and refile the charge. Kahumoku’s attorney, Scott Collins, said Delgado is in Puerto Rico and has been trying to convey to prosecutors that he no longer wants to pursue the case. Kahumoku, a three-time All-American whose college career ended last season, said she wants to move on.
“He and I remain very close, and we just want to get past this so we can go on with our lives,” she said. Kahumoku, 23, was arrested April 9 when officers were called to a Waikiki apartment in response to a quarrel between her and Delgado, who suffered minor injuries, police said.
Kahumoku, who now lives in California and plays professional beach volleyball, declined to discuss specifically what occurred.
She did say stress from volleyball played a big role in what happened.
