Kerry convention speech
It seems that the letter writer of August 3rd liked Senator Kerry’s convention speech. It was a wonderful speech.
What did he say? – He wants to lead a strong nation on defense and keep
us safe.
What did he do? – He voted against every major weapons program that helped us win the cold war and the wars in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq including the cruise missile, three classes of bombers including the stealth, advanced helicopters and everything else he could kill. He is on record for trying to severely limit our military and gutting our intelligence services.
What did he say? – He wants more for education. What has he done for education? President Bush has spent more money on education than any other President in history.
What did he say? – He wants more for the elderly. What has he done for the elderly? Under the current leadership there has been more progress than in the previous ten years with regards to getting elderly costs down.
What did he say? – He wants tax cuts.
Reality – Mr. Kerry is on record for voting to raise taxes on everyone for the past 19 years. Under President Bush we’ve had the most comprehensive tax reform since President Reagan. Yes, the rich, who pay 90% of all taxes, got a tax break, but so did all brackets of tax paying Americans.
What did he say? – We need to create more jobs. No more outsourcing? Reality – Mr. Kerry and his rich wife are owners, and get the majority of their money, from a company called Heinz, a huge outsourcing company. With 51 factories throughout Asia and the rest of the world Mr. Kerry’s money is made from outsourcing tens of thousands of jobs away from America.

“Fair and balanced”
This summer’s conventions will help us decide the most important election of our era. So why did “fair and balanced” Fox News show so much less of the Democratic convention than its cable peers?
Instead of letting us hear the Democrats’ vision for America, Fox News continually interrupted the speeches to give more air time to their own pundits.
Serious news outlets give their viewers every opportunity to decide for themselves, especially when it comes to how they’ll vote. Fox News seems intent on only giving us one side of the story.

Widemann relative
Yesterday I received the Saturday (7/24/04) issue of The Garden Island, and was both heartened and encouraged to see that Mayor Bryan Baptiste has taken a strong stand for the public interest, by not allowing a Hollywood industrialist to close the public access and subsequent privatization of the beach at Papa‘a Bay.
Can any kama‘aina imagine a beach not inhabited by Hawaiians in the past? The mayor needs our support to continue to protect our interest against powerful big money investors. This all to familiar story is of particular interest to me, in this case the public access crosses a section of ranch known as the Widemann Reservation. Judge Widemann, my grandfather, lived most of his adult life in public service, on Kaua‘i, then O‘ahu. Knowing him as I do, he would turnover in his grave than deny a Hawaiian public access to a Hawaiian beach.

Rebuttal
I rarely respond to letters which “attack” my previous communications but the inaccuracies stated by “rebuttal” letter printed July 18 of my recent letter were over the top. First, The Garden Island did not print the entirety of my letter so points I made were not fully elucidated. Second, nowhere in my letter did I “praise” any “softer approach.” These words, “softer approach” were not used in my letter. Further, I did not mention increased taxes and spending as a way to solve the drug problem. Additionally, my letter had nothing to do with Mick Jagger or Keith Richards’ drug challenges.
Ms. Woodruff continued to “read into” certain points I made, turning them around to support her flawed thesis. Whereas, I don’t support limiting access to needed drugs, I do, however, have serious issues with prescribing Ritilin and other antidepressants to children. But that is an entirely different story. And, yes, I do question wiretapping as a means to solve the drug issue. Yet I fail to see where in my letter that I equated street drugs with government regulated prescription drugs. I never said anywhere that I support a return to Prohibition. Once again, the letter writer jumped the gun, raising collateral issues which had nothing to do with the intent of my letter.
Finally, we do agree on something. I would like to see a campaign based on “integrity, truth and creative vision” as opposed to “mudslinging and attack.” However, we may have a different understanding of “truth.” Truth does not slant and create inaccurate generalizations. The letter writer supports Maryanne Kusaka for Senate. This is fine. But, please, don’t slant, generalize, and bend statements that I said in order to support your position. End of story.

ATVs on beach
This is an open letter to all those who use the motor cross track by the Radisson Hotel. Why do you people have to drive your ATV’S on the beach or the road parallel to the golf course? We go to the beach/ golf courseto have a relaxing day, just like you are relaxing with your bikes. So why can’t you stay in your alloted space? I was under the impression that those machines were illegal on the beach anyway. It’s very distracting to get ready to hit the ball and hear the motorcross bike rev its engine as it speeds by you. Many of these people on the bikes are taking young children for rides without helmets! Isn’t there a law about helmets? Can you imagine a three year old baby on the front of this machine with its mother/little brother going 35 mph and they have an accident? They’ll be the first to try and sue the county! Wise up folks. We do call the KPD, but they are busy and do come, but as soon as they leave, these people are right back out there doing it again! Maybe it’s time to shut it down for a while to teach you people a lesson.
By the way, while you are all out there with your big trucks, why don’t you get together and clean up the trash? The old barbeque, the tires, the old desk chair, etc. What the heck, we could make it a day of cleaning! Let’s keep our Kaua‘i clean!!!
