WAIMEA — A win for the Wes Syde Gurls would put them in second place for the 14 Under summer softball league, but the pairing of Wailana Borrero and Darci Murata damped those plans, 10-1, just as the pre-game showers settled the dust in the infield Thursday evening at the Waimea Canyon Park.
Borrero, considered the Hokuala ace, got off to a shaky start, walking the first two Wes Syde batters, but came back for three straight strikeouts enroute to finishing with no runs, no hits allowed, walking the first two batters, and finishing with five strikeouts before being relieved by Murata in the fifth inning in the game shortened by the 8-run rule.
Murata closed the books with a run allowed on no hits with no walks while striking out one.
Kanoe Carveiro was strapped with the loss for Waimea with 10 runs allowed on 13 hits while striking out two, and walking eight.
Cayla Shimatsu finished with an RBI for Wes Syde as a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fifth accounted for the sole Waimea run as Sheena Raposas crossed the plate.
Sara Phillips, whose parents are headed to Hilo to take in the Babe Ruth state championships starting this Friday, led the Hokuala offense with a perfect 2-2 showing, netting a single and a triple with three runs scored along with a trio of stolen bases.
Jaexenne Balilea also went 2-2 with a pair of two baggers, a scored run and an RBI. Krystal Ijima (3-4) notched a pair of singles and a double while driving in two runs, stealing a bag, and scoring once.
Over at the Anne Knudsen park in Koloa, Le‘a Tamura allowed nine runs on five hits while walking six and whiffing three in her two-inning stint as Na Koa finished with a 23-14 showing in a game called after three innings on time limit.
Maegan Pablo relieved Tamura for 2/3 inning before Stephanie Kawamura closed, Pablo allowing five runs on one hit while walking four.
Kawamura ended the contest with a strikeout.
Calyssa Braun was saddled with the Koloa loss in two innings, allowing 16 runs on three hits while walking 10 Kapa‘a batters and getting one whiff.
Shana Tafiti closed for Koloa, but not before allowing seven runs on no hits while walking seven.
Tamura, Pablo, and Kawamura came through in the batter’s box for Kapa‘a as well with Kawamura (1-1) taking the lead with a single, scoring four times, and picking up a steal.
Pablo (1-1) notched a double while scoring three times with Tamura (1-2) finishing with a single while scoring four times and picking up a pair of stolen bags.
Shana Tafiti (2-2) led the Koloa bats with a double and a single while scoring three times and stealing twice. Tauina Tafiti (1-1) finished with a single while scoring twice and stealing a pair of bases.
