PUHI — Several hundred soccer players, their coaches, parents, and supporters converged at the Island School soccer complex as the 2004 Kaua‘i Cup soccer tournament got underway Friday.
Sean Magoun, the tournament coordinator, had his hands full as he juggled between checking in teams, getting referees assigned to the three games going on at three separate fields, and still managing to take orders from thirsty spectators and players.
Magoun said the three-day tournament features a field of 16 teams, nine of which come from off-island.
In an effort at beating the heat, one parent who sought shelter under one of the trees lining the soccer field said, “You should see the line at Jamba. It’s all the way in the store, and even going outside!”
That left little option but to indulge in the cold drink offerings from the tournament’s central information tent where cold drinks as well as souvenir tournament tee-shirts were being offered for sale.
There is no admission charge to check out the soccer action that begins at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and continues through most of the daylight hours this weekend.
The championship games are scheduled to begin around midday Sunday.
