Kaua‘i Apprentice?
Think you can make the jump from Kaua‘i to the Big Apple? NBC’s hit reality show “The Apprentice” is holding auditions for their third season in Honolulu Saturday, July 17, at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki. All participants must be at least 21 years old and have a completed application as well as a 10-minute video on why they should be chosen. Applications are available at khnl.com.
Loan Scam
Hawaii consumers last week were warned about a Canadian company accused of ripping off loan applicants through newspaper ads around the United States.
The state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs said that regulators in Maine said they were flooded with calls from as far away as Texas and Hawaii, where consumers have responded to the print ads by Direct Finance Company.
Consumers were urged in the ad to call a toll-free number and “apply” for a loan. They were told that they had been “approved” and then were directed to send hundreds of dollars to a Canadian address for the Direct Finance Company.
“Legitimate lenders usually don’t ask for huge fees upfront,” said Mark Recktenwald, Hawaii’s director of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Direct Finance Company has a legitimate-looking Web site — www.DirectFinanceLoans.com — and lists an address in South Portland, Maine. Regulators in Maine say the company is not located in that state, and never has been.

Greg Schleper’s Kapaa-based alfalfa business was featured in a Friday, June 25 Garden Island lead story entitled “Contamination reports a concern to local sprout business.” Sprouts aren’t his only business, and he wanted Kauai to know that he did not intend to mislead. The story affected only his sprout business.
