UH standouts head to Olympics

COLORADO SPRINGS — U.S.A. Volleyball nominated 24 athletes, 12 each to both the U.S. Women’s and Men’s Olympic Teams today pending certification by the United States Olympic Committee. Among the nominations were three former University of Hawai`i volleyball standouts: Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, Heather Bown, and Clay Stanley.
The following are the 12 nominations for the U.S. Women’s team: Setters, Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (Honolulu, HI) and Lindsey Berg (Honolulu, HI); Middle Blockers, Wiz Bachman (Lakeville, MN); Heather Bown (Yorba Linda, CA) and Danielle Scott (Baton Rouge, LA); Outside Hitters, Tara Cross-Battle (Houston, TX), Ogonna Nnamani (Normal, IL), Keba Phipps (Las Vegas, CA) and Logan Tom (Salt Lake City, UT); Opposites, Tayyiba Haneef (Laguna Hills, CA) and Nancy Metcalf (Hull, IA); and Libero, Stacy Sykora (Burleson, TX).
The U.S. women, who are under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Toshi Yoshida, are ranked No. 2 in the world going into the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Team U.S.A. is currently competing at the World Grand Prix in Asia. The U.S. men’s nominations include Setters, Lloy Ball (Woodburn, IN) and Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania); Middle Blockers, Phil Eatherton (Glencoe, MO), Tom Hoff (Park Ridge, IL) and Ryan Millar (Palmdale, CA); Outside Hitters, Kevin Barnett (Naperville, IL), Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, CA), Reid Priddy (Richmond, VA) and Riley Salmon (League City, TX); Opposites, Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, CA) and Clay Stanley (Honolulu, HI); and Libero, Erik Sullivan (Encinitas, CA). The U.S. men’s team in under the leadership of veteran head coach Doug Beal, who guided the men to an Olympic gold medal in 1984. He is taking a record-tying third squad to the Olympics in Athens, Greece, next month. The men qualified for Athens by winning the NORCECA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in January and are currently ranked No. 6 in the world. Ah Mow-Santos and Bown are competing in their second-straight Olympics, while Stanley is making his first appearance. The Olympics run August 13-29 in Athens, Greece.
California resident nabs a hole-in-one
John J. Matusek of Palm Desert, California made a Hole in One on Wailua’s 17th hole, 173 yards, on July 8. Matusek used a Ping I3 5 iron and this was his first hole-in-one in his 25 years of golfing. Matusek said, “This is one of the most beautiful par 3’s in Hawai‘i and the ball almost went in on the fly.”
Summer horseshoe pitching tournament
The Anahola Horseshoe Club is hosting an Open 40 Footer’s Summer Doubles horseshoe pitching tournament from August 21-22 with check-in time at 9:00 a.m., and the event starts at 10:00 a.m. It’s open to anyone interested in organized horseshoe pitching. The format will be a round robin/cancellation scoring system. Entry fee is $20.00 per person/$40.00 per team.
