KALAHEO — The number-one seed Lihu‘e Breakaway fell to number-four seed Westside Hornets, 34-30 on Thursday at Kalaheo Gym in the boys 14-and-under playoffs. Kyle Achuela led the Hornets with 12 points. Justin Ramos paced Lihu‘e with eight. In another upset, the Kapa‘a Warriors beat Kalaheo, 44-31. Elijah Phillips scored eight for Kapa‘a and Tyrus Ceria-Lux led all scorers with 14.
The 16-and-under game went to the Waimea Fakers, led by Chris Newcomb with 14. Alden Lahip notched 15 for Kalaheo.
Cherilyn Kua came up with 11 of her game-high 13 points in the final quarter as the Westside Hornets II came back from an 11-8 halftime deficit to take a 30-25 victory over the Westside Hornets I in the KYBA 14 Under girls basketball program Wednesday night in Kalaheo.
Krystle Manguba-Glover, who had led the Westside Hornets I with six first-half points, was limited to just a pair in the final frame to finish with eight points to lead the Hornets I in their loss.
Student coach Tori Kagawa was excited with her team’s comeback win that came with Kiera Barba adding eight markers to Kua’s lead, and guard Tori Espino’s five-point contribution that included a third quarter trey.
Kayla Santa Ana and Britney Yadao-Lanning each finished with a pair to round out the Hornets II math.
Natalie Mata chalked up six second-half points to help Manguba-Glover’s efforts for the Hornets I with Sheana Mata adding five points. Whitney Cachero added four, and a pair by Sunni Acosta rounded out the books.
Aiko Grande notched five of the Kaumakani Supersonics’ 11 third quarter points that pulled the girls in blue to a 38-27 win over the Kaua‘I Fire Raiders in the second contest of the night.
Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade came up with seven of the Supersonics’ 14 fourth-quarter points to lead the win with a game-total 14 points followed by Sera Pascual’s eight-point contribution.
Jayme Jacinto joined Grande with five points, and Elizabeth Lagundino, Chaelyn Briones, and Jeanna Andres each finishing with a pair in the win.
Brandi Kohatsu finished with 16 points to lead the Fire Raiders followed by Kori Masuda adding six points. Wailana Borrero and Darienne St. Laurent chipped in a pair each to round out the scoring.
In the third game of the night, Vincent Vea helped the Westside Hornets cruise past Run-N-Fun, 40-39. Treston Rego led Run-N-Fun with 15 points in the boys 16-and-under game.
Kilauea wrapped up its game schedule on Wednesday with Kilauea Hui beating C-Town, 45-14. Kirstie Daly and April Johnson each scored 10 points for the Hui. Shelcie Rapozo-Dela Cruz notched six points for C-Town.
Wailua I was the other winner in the second girls 14-and-under game, as they beat the Eastside Gurlz 40-22. Jondi Das led Wailua with 14 points. Kela Caspitto netted nine for Eastside.
In boys 19-and-under action on Tuesday, Lihu‘e came out strong in the first half leading with a 24-17 lead at the half, but was upended by the B-Ballers, 37-36. But it was the B-Ballers winning both quarters in the second half scoring 20 to Lihu‘e’s 12 for the victory. High scorers were Chris Miyashiro with 14 points and Kaina Kaauwai adding 10 before fouling out. Aaron Racca led the Lihu‘e Squad with 21 points while Aukai Dennis contibuted 10.
Kalaheo led from the tip giving the Zoom a clinic in teamwork, 65-32. Kalaheo had 4 players all scoring in double figures with great execution and teamwork.
It was Tab Matsumoto with the game high of 16 points followed by Ross Acoba with 15 points Desmond Rodrigues with 14 and Kaleo Perez with 11. Brandon Wong and Randy Vicoy led the Zoom both scoring 8 points each. The Zoom also missed their main attack Ryan Cram due to an illness.
Meanwhile, on Thursday in Kapa‘a, the Southside Boys tamed the Eastside B-Ballers, 43-32 in boys 19-and-under action. The Boys controlled the pace of the game from the tip, playing tough defense and executing a good offense. Jeremy Manuel controlled the tempo for the boys early on scoring 7 points in the first period and finishing with 22 to lead South Side. Austin Rosa led the Ballers with 10 and was held scoreless in the final period.
Westside won the second game by forfeit. In game three, Lihu‘e (Lee) defeated Lihu‘e (Medina), 33-29. Kaylan Dolor came out hot for Medina’s hitting 3 for 3 from the 3 point range, Lee’s adjusted and held Dolor to only one more field goal the rest of the game. Aren Raca led Lihu‘e (Lee) with 9 points while Dolor led Lihu‘e (Medina) with 11 points.
