KAPA‘A n While Detroit was having their way with L.A. in the Motor City, over at the Bernice Hundley, it was a totally different story as two Lihu‘e 12 Under boys teams struggled for defensive supremacy in the championship of the KYBA 12 Under boys summer program.
With good-sized supporters cheering both the C-Town Wolves and the Lihu‘e Maniacs, the Maniacs came back from a 5-2 first quarter deficit to take the 35-27 contest behind ten-point contributions from Jordan Tottori and Scot Sasan, Sasan fouling out late in the final quarter.
Coach Daniel Simao could be heard above the cheering of C-Town fans, urging his team, “Defense! Defense!” while on the other side of the scorer’s table, Maniacs’ coach Leland Tottori noted, “I lost my voice” following the defensive slugfest that saw two players from each team foul out before the trophy ownership was decided.
“It could’ve gone either way,” KYBA commissioner Gary Maguire said following the game. “Even the third place Hanamaulu team beat C-Town in one of the earlier games, and could’ve had a shot (for the trophy).”
The Tottori-Sasan duo sparked the Maniacs’ 14-8 second quarter run before holding off C-Town for the remainder of the contest.
Micah Kaleo Cummings and Aston Carbonel each finished with four points to help the Maniacs with Christian Largo and Matthew Curnan each chipping in a pair.
Kalen Kimura and Kealoha Lopez paced the Wolves with six points apiece with Kalen Kali-Abiha adding five markers.
