Malia and Malahini triumph
NAWILIWILI — The sixth and final race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Honu (Turtle) Series took place Thursday evening, June 10th. The ENE wind was blowing around 15 to 20 knots as the boats sailed from inside the harbor to the red can by the lighthouse three times for a total of 7.96 nautical miles.
Five monohulls participated with the results as follows (time is the corrected time based on the boat’s rating): 1. Malia 1:08:21, 2. O’Zone 1:12:19, 3. Papa Au 1:14:09, 4. Speedy 1:19:05 and 5. Coyote 1:23:41. Two multi-hulls participated; Kalewa place first (1:10:29) and Malihini was second (1:15:57).
Malia, a Gene Wells monohull, lead the Open Class.The results for the six race Hono series are as follows:Open Class – 1. Malia, 2. Malihini and 3. Papa Au Monohull Class – 1. Malia, 2. Speedy and 3. Papa Au Multihull Class – 1. Malihini and 2. Kalewa.
On the second Saturday of every month the Nawiliwili Yacht Club conducts the Feature Boat Series, various off-shore races. The fifth of the ten race series took place Saturday, June 12.
Six boats sailed from Nawiliwili Harbor in 15 to 20 knot ENE winds to Kipu Kai and back.
The results for the monohulls are as follows (time is the corrected time based on the boat’s rating): 1. Malia (1:10:59), 2. Papa Au (1:19:06), 3. Windspan (1:25:04) and 4. Coyote (1:29:18).
In the multihull class Kalewa placed first (1:03:07) and Malihini second (1:15:58). Kalewa also won the Open Class and is this month’s Feature Boat.
The sixth Feature Boat race will be on Saturday, July 3rd from Nawiliwili to Hanalei.
The first flag is at 0900. The public is invited to attend the “grill your own food” party which will take place at 3:00 p.m. at the Hanalei Pavilion.

SAN FRANCISCO — Marion Jones stepped up her public relations offensive by releasing results of a lie detector test her lawyer said proves she never took performance-enhancing drugs. The move came just hours after she was accused of grandstanding by the international doping chief.
