Construction of 184-unit timeshare villas in Princeville for Starwood Vacation Ownership, Inc. could happen as soon as this winter.
Starwood has filed with the Kaua‘i planning department and is going through the application process now.
“Depending on how progress is made the next several months, the earliest we could be under construction is roughly November or December,” said David Matheson, Starwood Vice President for Communications.
“Our plans call for 184 twobedroom lock-off timeshare villas,” he said. “We have made a number of changes to prior plans based on feedback from the community – most notably changes to the actual footprint of some of the buildings to alleviate some of the concerns from neighbors on view lines and up- grading road access to the site.” We have also changed the number of villas from our original plans.
Buoyed by the success of its time-share resort on Maui, Starwood hopes to build another 258 villas there.
“Our time share (on Maui) is the most successful we’ve done,” Matheson said. “Our first phase was sold out before we completed construction and our second phase is going to be sold out before we open next year.” The chain started on its first timeshare project on Maui with the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas. To sell the units, the chain opened additional sales offices at Princeville and at the Sheraton Waikiki.
Most of the unit buyers continue to be mainland vacationers with a good mix of Japanese as well, Matheson said.
He wouldn’t divulge how much the company plans to invest in Hawaii, but noted that project costs in Hawaii tend to be higher than the mainland.
