Iraq situation
It’s amazing that the “few bad apples” at Abu Ghraib prison came up with identical methods of the torture and sexual humiliation of the Iraqi detainees by themselves. While the Nuremberg Defense does not wash, the responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of thePNAC political appointees whose ignorance of the region and staggering hubris brought us the debacle in Iraq and George W. Bush for appointing them. I am shocked and awed at their egregious use of these kids (and they are kids) as well as sacrificing the lives of almost 800 others as leverage fortheir PNAC theories of world and economic domination. Their sole success has been to unite the heretofore conflicting Islamic sects and tribes against us.
In the early 1900’s Gertrude Bell (who drew the current boundaries of the Middle East for the British) wrote to her father: “Islam is the bond that unites…the continent as it is the electric current by which the transmission of sentiment is effected, and its potency is increased by the fact there is little or no sense of territorial nationality to counterbalance it.”
Perhaps the Bush administration should be required to take a few remedial courses in world history.
