Kaua‘i County officials recently recognized a federal program that has brought $16 million to Kaua‘i over the past 30 years for the development of housing, jobs, public service and infrastructure.
In a proclamation declaring parts of last month as “Community Development Week on Kaua‘i,” Mayor Bryan Baptiste said the Community Development Block Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have helped shaped the Kaua‘i of today.
“The CDBG program continues to enable communities such as Kaua‘i to address the physical, economic and human services needs of our low-and-moderate-income residents,” Baptiste said.
Bernard Carvalho, director of the Offices of Community Assistance announced the county agency anticipates receiving $936,202 in CDBG funds in the federal fiscal year of 2004. The funds could be released in August.
Five Kaua‘i projects have been selected for funding by Baptiste.
The projects include:
- $325,000 for pre-development and on-site improvements for an emergency and transitional homeless shelter, a project undertaken by Kauai Economic Opportunity.
- $210,000 for the development of the YMCA facility in Puhi.
- $98,000 for the financing of low-cost mortgage loans for low-and moderate income, first-time buyers. The funds would be used for the county’s Section 8 Homeownership Program.
- $97,800 to create apiary microenterprises to promote self-sufficiency through a program undertaken by Pacific Gateway Center.
- $39,864 for classes to help low-to-moderate-income households learn what is involved in buying a home, and how to overcome barriers they may face in becoming successful homeowners.
