Kennelly advances at Roxy Pro
TAVARUA & NAMOTU ISLANDS, Fiji — Defending Roxy Pro champion Keala Kennelly (Kaua‘i, HAW) won a tight, wave-starved heat against Australians Samantha Cornish (crescent Head) and Lynette MacKenzie (Maroubra) before conditions deterioated Monday, and forced the postponement of competition at the fourth Roxy Pro.
Kennelly got a couple of waves straight away, and despite tying with Cornish on their best two waves, took the heat on a single ride count.
French surfer Caroline Sarran held off a strong challenge from Australia’s Carly Smith (Byron Bay) to win the Roxy Trials final, the 19-year-old impressing everyone with her equal fifth placing in 2003, and advancing to round three of this year’s event.
Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich dominated her heat, collecting the highest combined scores of the day at 15.75 points.
World #4 Chelsea Georgeson (Golf Coast, AUS) took a win over WCT newcomer Melanie Bartels (HAW) and Maria Tavares (BRA), the Australian answering back from a midway deficit to claim the heat with an 8.5 ride.
Other standouts included six-time world champion Layne Beachley, Melanie Redman-Carr, and Megan Abubo (HAW).
