The Waimea High School Menehune, playing four games in two days, laid claim to their own 21st Annual Waimea High School Invitational Baseball Tournament with a 6-4 win over Mid Pacific, which up until the final game, was undefeated in tournament play.
According to one spectator, the Menehune played a solid game, utilizing a stable of three pitchers, and good hitting to build up to the two-point win over Mid Pac.
The spectator said that the Menehune should be in shape by the time the KIF season rolls around.
Earlier in the pre-season, the Menehune had handed Punahou its only loss in the Mid Pacific tournament, and suffered a loss at the hands of the host Owls, but on Satuday, the Menehune redeemed themselves before a home crowd that enjoyed ideal baseball weather at Hanapepe Stadium, the winds that created havoc everywhere else providing a respite from the Westside heat, the spectator said.
Waianae finished the tournament with a 10-4 win against Kailua who suffered their first loss at the hands of the Menehune Friday.
Kaua‘i High School downed Leilehua 10-6 and the Kapa‘a Warriors suffered a 7-5 loss at the hands of the Waimea Menehune in the day’s opener.
The first KIF season game will take place Saturday, Mar. 20 when the Kaua‘i Red Raiders travel to the Ron Martin Field in Kapa‘a for a double-header against Kapa‘a starting at noon.
