BYUH women’s tennis gets past Portland
LA‘IE, O‘ahu — The Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i women’s tennis defeated Division I University of Portland Thursday, 7-1. The number six singles was unfinished due to rain.
In other singles, BYUH swept Portland led by Adrienn Hegedus who beat Cristin Sammis 6-4, 6-1. In the number two spot, Jing Jing Liu defeated Kaori Tanabe 6-2, 6-3. Anna Lewis took spot number three for the Seasiders by beating Jaclyn Soltysik 6-2, 6-0. Amy Sun defeated Alyson Taylor for spot number four 6-2, 6-2. Gurianna Korinihona who beat Rebecca Correll 6-2, 6-1, earned the number five spot. Because of the rain, the number six singles was unfinished, and at the time the match ended, Portland’s Dierdre Ring-Marrison was leading Crystal Schwenke 6-4, 3-4.
In doubles Hegedus and Liu led the way for BYUH by beating Tyson and Tanabe 8-1. Sun and Judy Weng took spot number two by defeating Correll and Soltysik 8-2. Portland gained their one point in number three doubles as Rockett and Sammis beat Trisha Piercy and Hana Chovanova 8-3.
The Seasiders play again on Monday against Bryant University in La‘ie.
“Relay for Life” tennis tournament Registration
The American Cancer Society invites tennis players to take part in their “Relay for Life” Tennis Tournament that will take place at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts between Mar. 23-26 from 6 to 10 p.m.
Tournament format is 8.0 Level (both players have to be rated 4.0), 7.0 Level (both players have to be rated 3.5), and 6.0 Level (both players have to be rated 3.0).
Tournament organizers say you do not have to be a USTA member to participate in this tournament. Any player not having a current USTA rating will get placed accordingly into the best rating category that the tournament committee sees fit.
Scoring will be best two out of three sets regular scoring. The third set will be a Super Tiebreaker (first to 10 points, must win by 2) with play governed by USTA Rules and Guidelines.
The deadline to enter the tournament is Mar. 20 at 5 p.m.
The cost is $20 per team with all the proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society.
