HANAPEPE — Kapa’a may have controlled the tempo of both KIF soccer games Thursday night at Hanapepe Stadium, but the results saw the Warriors split the contest with the boys dropping to Waimea 2-1 and the girls getting on the bus on a winning note, 2-1.
The Warriors lost little time establishing themselves on the field as Billy Toy punched in the first goal from the rightside with less than three minutes peeled off the clock.
Breaking open the defensive slugfest that ensued, Waimea got on the boards at the 13:45 mark as forward Chad Thompson sank the tying goal from the right to end the half 1-1.
The jockeying for position, and keeping the ball out of the goalmouth continued in the second half, Kapa’a’s Ryan Cram drawing ooh’s from the audience with his demonstration of fancy footwork and ball handling in the midfield.
But, the antics stopped at the 16:30 mark as Walea Arquette boomed a shot from the right pocket, the ball being snagged by Kapa’a goalie Alika Woodward only to slip away and dribble past the goal plane as Woodward watched helplessly.
The Menehune defense stiffened, and in a test of the Warrior D, yellow cards flashed, the first being drawn by Waimea’s Wayne Remata.
Kapa’a midfielder Waylon Sadang was the recipient of the second yellow, and Luke Tsuchiya got the third to settle play down as Waimea held off Kapa’a for the win.
The Kapa’a women continued to control the tempo on the field in the nightcap, with Jantil Leota breaking the ice on a long breakaway up the middle, shooting from about 20 feet out at the 16-minute mark of the first half.
Kapa’a continued to hammer away at Waimea goalie Faa Taala, including another breakaway shot up the right-middle that got past Taala, but Tori Kagawa’s quick defensive back-up saved that goal to keep Waimea in the chase 1-0 at the half.
The defensive jockeying continued in the second half until Waimea’s Lauren Rosare scored on a second effort in heavy traffic to knot the contest 1-1 at the 15-minute mark.
Less than five minutes later, Jackie Huttger sank the go-ahead goal through middle traffic at the 19-minute mark, that goal proving to be the game-winner for the girls.
Waimea will travel to Vidinha Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 13 to play against the Kaua’i Red Raiders who had almost all of their varsity boys and girls squads in attendance along with their coaches.
