The Garden Island and the Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the community to try to make the holidays a little happier for those in need.
Every year, community members are asked to make donations to the Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without help. Every day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about people who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to protect their privacy, but the stories are all actual case histories of people living on Kaua’i.
For more than 20 years, the community has come through with Kaua’i aloha, although some years, when times are tough for everyone, it hasn’t been easy. If donors could see the smiles on the faces of those they have helped — young and old — they would feel their contributions are well-spent.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden Island Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 1120, Kapa’a HI 96746. Christmas-Fund organizers hope neighbors continue their traditional generosity, which has helped countless families have a merry Christmas for more than 20 years.

Family needs help for medical travel
Katherine is a severely medically fragile infant. Her parents are very young and need any support they can get. Her mom works and dad is a dishwasher. Any kind of support would be very helpful to this struggling family. Both parents are needed to travel for Katherine’s medical appointments in O’ahu. They are in real need of financial assistance or airline coupons for medical travel.
Darren could use art supplies
Darren was recently displaced from a group home living situation. His living expenses surpass his income (medical, rent, utilities, food). He could use financial assistance to help him to purchase the basic needs. He loves and collects G.I. Joes and Big Rig trucks, and is an artist of Big Rig Trucks. He could also use markers and art paper.
Food and clothes needed
Richard is a resident here with his mom and family. Because of his developmental delays, he hasn’t been able to pass citizenship requirement. His mom is the sole supporter of a very large family. Because of Richard’s citizenship status, he has not been able to qualify for any financial assistance. He could really use financial assistance for food, personal hygiene products, clothes and whatever else is needed.
Brothers need shoes and pants
Tom and Sam are elderly brothers who have been living together for the past 20 years and have no other family members on the island. Each brother has always been sociable and very outgoing and able to care of his own needs.
Recently, they have each suffered some serious medical problems, resulting in high medical bills. On their limited incomes, and after paying for necessities and medical bills the brothers have no money to buy any extras that they need. This holiday season would be made more special for them with some new shoes and pants.
