Cody Kangiser of Oregon was hosted at a mahalo get-together Sunday held at Lydgate Park in Wailua.
Kaua‘i resident Alice Nishihara started e-mailing the 11-year-old boy after learning of his brain tumors and diabetes problems, and when she found out math was his favorite subject, Alice’s son Jerry Nishihara, a math teacher at Waimea High School, started corresponding with the youngster.
The Nishihiras said they felt very honored to be invited to meet the youngster who was here celebrating his 12th birthday, which Kangiser celebrated on Halloween, Oct. 31.
Kangiser’s friends and relatives on Kaua‘i have held a series of car washes and other fundrasing events to help the boy travel to Kaua‘i.
