KEKAHA — A helicopter crash that occurred around noon yesterday is apparently the cause of a fire in an area mauka of the main gate at Pacific Missile Range Facility
Kaua’i Fire Department officials responded to reports of a private helicopter hitting a power line and crashing. The pilot survived the crash which ignited brush in the area.
Fire personnel from Waimea, Hanapepe and Lïhu’e responded to the fire, as well as a crash fire team. Air One performed water drops in an effort to extinguish the fire.
There are no homes in the area of the fire, according to county Public Information Officer Cyndi Mei Ozaki of the Mayor’s office, who said more details will be released as they become available.
