Kekoa Crowell made some nifty plays in the first half of play to keep Kaua‘i even with El Camino Real on Friday night at Vidinha Stadium.
However, when it was all said and done, Eddie Gomez stole the show.
Gomez rushed for a game-high 199 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Conquistadores to a 29-15 preseason win over the Red Raiders.
Crowell completed 9-of-11 passes in the first half for 121 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which came with six seconds left in the second quarter that helped Kaua‘i tie El Camino at 15.
For the game, the Red Raiders’ quarterback hit on 13-of-20 passes for 153 yards.
Crowell also had two big runs in the first 24 minutes of action including a 42-yard scamper that put Kaua‘i in position to score on its first possession of the game.
The Red Raiders opened the scoring on a 14-yard touchdown strike from Crowell to Justin Arakaki.
For the game, Arakaki hauled in three passes for 20 yards.
However, the Conquistadores took an 8-7 lead at 9:26 of the second quarter after Gomez rushed in from 2-yards out for the score.
In the first half of play, Gomez bulldozed through the Kaua‘i defensive line for 89 yards on 15 carries. For the game, the El Camino rushing attack churned out 326 yards on 54 carries.
Conquistadores’ passer Daray Davis rushed 11 times for 82 yards and two scores.
His 3-yard touchdown run with 2:10 left in the second quarter put El Camino on top 15-7 before the Red Raiders marched 75 yards to get even just before halftime.
In the second half of action, the Conquistadores continued to play ball control with their physical running game, adding a third quarter touchdown on the second Gomez score, a 5-yard run.
El Camino then opened up its 14-point cushion midway through the final period when Davis scored from 1-yard out.
Lance Okasaki was the leading receiver for the Red Raiders with 82 yards on four catches.
The Red Raiders host Punahou next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
