The Converse Hawaiian Open will set a new standard in professional surfing this weekend when it offers equal prize money to male and female surfers.
Paul Holmes, Longboard magazine contributing editorsaid, “This is a breakthrough moment for surfing and all pro sports. In the past, the women have always taken second stage to the men in pro surfing, usually having to surf for less money, and often in poorer wave conditions. With this new U.S. Championship tour, the men and women are on equal footing.”
The Converse Open is the second in a series of three events that together will crown the 2003 men’s and women’s United States Professional Longboard Champion.
The first was the Easter Surfing Festival Longboard Pro in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
The final stage of the series will be the Converse California Classic, Sept. 20-21 at Malibu’s Surfrider Beach.
The purse is $10,000 with $4,000 for the winner.
