LIHU’E – It was going to become a 4-game stalemate series with Kapa’a before Kaua’i’s Mason Chan took a Koji Nakaya throw-in late in the second half to notch the only goal in the varsity boys contest that broke a 0-0 deadlock and gave the contest to the Red Raider men who had earlier in the season clinched the KIF championship.
The varsity girls ended the evening with a 3-3 tie with Kapa’a as both squads unlocked the armory in the second half to score two goals apiece, Kaua’i’s Shauna Tachibana striking first on a breakaway down the wing.
Kapa’a answered back as Danielle Hill notched a goal when Kaua’i goalie Ashton Pigao came out of the mouth on a save, but missed the attempt leaving the goal open.
Jackie Huttger clanged the top bar of the goal to announce Kapa’a’s goal, but Kaua’i came back as Holly Iloreta followed through on a Stacy Sueoka shot-on-goal attempt for the 3-3 reading.
Kapa’a struck first in the top half as Kelly Devitt’s bullet ricochetted off Pigao’s hand, and hit the goal post before nesting in the folds. That goal was answered by Kaua’i’s Amber Santos.
The JV squads both battled to tie games as well with the boys ending at 1-1 with Kaua’i’s Agustin Garcia and Kapa’a’s Jonathan Moeller striking goals.
Emma Makepa Foley notched two goals for the Kaua’i JV squad, but was answered by a Michelle Toy shot and a Rancee Wilson goal with Lauren Baptiste assisting for the 2-2 final math.
