Gerald McCombs
Gerald “Jerry” R. McCombs of Colorado Springs, Colo. and formerly of Princeville, Hawaii, died May 21, 2002, at the age of 55.
Born in Cameron, West Virginia, on May 17, 1946, he served in the U.S. Air Force and is a Vietnam War veteran. He was also a building contractor for 22 years and owner of Custom Builders.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Lee Carey Kinsler McCombs; daughters Jerri Lynn McCombs Conway of Miami, Fla. and Sarah McCombs of Colorado Springs; two stepchildren, James Kinsler of Marion, Ohio and Carey Kinsler Rose of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, two step granddaughters, sisters Helen Lohr of Florida, Kathryn Haigh-McCarthy of New Jersey, Ethel Bacon, Rosali McCombs and Linda McCombs, all of Maryland; Caroll Traveny of Pennsylvania, Andora Stump of Virginia, and Nenya Lathom of West Virginia; brothers, Delbert of West Virginia, Kenneth of Maryland and Walter of Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Stella McCombs, five brothers and one sister.
Services will be at First Christian Church in Cameron, West Virginia, with burial at Highland Cemetery, Cameron, West Virginia.
George Fernandez
George Fernandez of Kekaha, Kauai, died May 24, 2002, at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home, at the age of 84.
An accountant for Kekaha Sugar Plantation, he was born April 23, 1918, in Waimea, Kaua’i.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Fernandez of Kekaha; one daughter: Patti Ann (Steven) Niau of Lawai; two sons: George “Chico” (Marie) Fernandez and Gerrit (Barbara) Fernandez, both of California; three grandchildren; two brothers: Anthony (Alice) Fernandez of California; Lawrence (Shirley) Fernandez of Kona; one sister: Ruth Trolesi of California; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call on Friday, May 31, at St. Theresa Church from 10 a.m. where services will be celebrated at St. Theresa’s Church from 10 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
The family asks that flowers be omitted and suggests casual attire.

Marco Ponicono
Marco Ponicono of Lihu’e, Kaua’i, died May 24, 2002, at Wilcox Hospital at the age of 71.
He was born April 4, 1930, in Molokai, HI.
He is survived by his step parents: Consorcia Labez Estenzo; nine sisters: Kathy Julieta (Dean) Howell of Colorado, Dorothy (John) Verano of Ewa Beach, Filomena (Jun) Quizon of Pearl City, HI, Francesca (Douglas) Berbano of Waianae, Dolores (Walter) Ashimine of Kaneohe, Catalina Kirsch of Kaneohe, Rosa Dejos, Nora Agravante, and Lani Ouye; five brothers: Julian (Michiko) Ledesma of Waipahu, Nelson (Gloria) Estenzo, Walter (Virgie) Estenzo, G. Larry Estenzo, and Wilfredo (Tessie) Estenzo; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Holy Cross Church from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. where services will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Keahi.

Llewella Zablan
Llewella Naukana Zablan of Koolau, Waipake, Kaua’i, died May 21, 2002, at Straub Hospital, at the age of 76.
A retired personnel specialist with the federal government, she was born Dec. 10, 1925.
She is survived by her husband: Francis B. Zablan; one son: Randy S. N. Rego; one daughter: Renee (Hank) Martin; two sisters: Karen Gabeler and Benedyne Kim; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may call on Friday, May 31, at Kapa’a First Hawaiian Church from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hawai’i Blood Bank.

Hazel Eguchi
Hazel Eguchi of Waimea, Kauai, died at Mahelona Hospital on May 22, 2002, at the age of 94.
A homemaker, she was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Hawaii.
She is survived by two sisters: Eunice Izumi and Jean Ishii.

Maryland Kamai
Maryland H. “Mele” Kamai of Kekaha, Kauai, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on May 24, 2002 at the age of 44.
Born in Puuwai, Niihau on April 26, 1958, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by husband, Joseph E. Kamai of Kekaha, Kauai; two sons, Joseph (Nalani) Kamai and Joshua K. Kamai both of Kekaha, Kauai; daughter, Christina (Soul) Hart of Hanapepe, Kauai; two grandchildren; brother, Moria (Tone) Niau of Hanapepe, Kauai; two sisters, Lillian (Melia) Niau of Waimea, Kauai and Pennie “Pua” (Billy) Niau of Eleele, Kauai; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family at 6 p.m. on June 1, at the Garden Island Mortuary chapel; service officiated by Kahu Independence Kaohelaulii will begin at 7 p.m.
