The girls’ 12-under and boys’ 14-under basketball seasons have come to a close, but there is still plenty of action to report on from games played through the recent week.
For boys 14-under: Starting on Saturday, March 9, at Kilauea Gymnasium, Kapaa, the Westside Hornets and Kilauea Lakers each came away with solid victories.
Kapa’a beat the Lihue Kings 36-26 on eight Gregg Ragsar points. Chad Nonaka had six points for the Kings. Chad Barba’s 14 points helped the Hornets top the Puhi Wildcats 37-19. Keenan Guzman scored nine points for the Wildcats. And Kilauea’s Kahua Hollinger scored 14 to boost his team to a 50-34 win over the Lihue Lakers. Garren Venzon, who topped all scorers in the series, score 16 for the Lakers.
On Thursday March 14 the Kilauea Lakers, the Lihue Lakers and the Westside Hornets each got wins at the Kalaheo NC Gymnasium.
Kilauea’s Hollinger scored another 12 points to put his team over the Lihue Kings 38-31. Both Kalau Hammond and Irah Nishi notched six points for the Kings.
John Penn and Brandon Ballestores each led their teams, and the series, with 17 points. Except Penn’s team, the Lihue Lakers, got the win over Ballesteros’ Wildcats.
Following a gritty overtime period, the Hornets edged the Kalaheo Pistons 37-34 in the final game on Thursday. Barba had 13 points for the Hornets; Josh Bradbury scored 12 for the Pistons.
On Saturday, March 16, at Kilauea Gymnasium, Kapaa, the Puhi Wildcats, and the Kalaheo Pistons each claimed victory to end off their season.
Junnel Calpito scored 13 points to lead Kapaa to a 39-24 win over the Lakers. Garren Venzon had 12 points for the Lakers.
Cheston Balaan’s 15 points led the Wildcats to a 51-41 win over Kilauea. Kapena Cummings scored 14 for Kilauea.
Josh Bradbury scored 19 for the Pistons and Kaleo Perez put up 18 for the Kings to lead a tough scoring duo in the last game of the season. The Pistons got the win, 40-32.
For Girls: On Tuesday, March 12, at the Kalaheo NC Gymnasium, Waimea B&G Club, Kapaa Ladybugs and Hanamaulu Coyotes 2 each went home with victories.
Ho’onani Dennis and Shelcie Rapozo Dela Cruz combined for 12 points for the Kauai Fire Raiders, but it wasn’t enough to top the B&G Club, who won the game 41-19. Moana Durant put up 14 points to lead Waimea to the win.
Savannah Kupihea and Meagan Pablo each scored 5 points to lead the Ladybugs to an 18-11 win over the Hanamaulu Coyotes 1. Chelsey Ah Nee scored seven points for the Coyotes 1.
The Coyotes 2 got eight points from Jondi Das in its 16-15 win over the Westside Hornets. Sunni Acosta scored five points for the Hornets.
On Thurday, March 14, at Kilauea Gymnasium, Waimea B&G, the Lihue Raiders and Kilauea 1 each notched wins.
Durant scored an impressive 16 points to lead B&G to a 28-21 win over the Lokahi Girls. Brittney Carvalho scored 11 points for the Lokahi Girls.
The Raider got 11 points from Carrie Inouye in its 33-21 win over Kilauea 2. Kieren Pond scored eight points for Kilauea 2.
Kilauea used Caroline Troutman’s 12 points to beat Hanamaulu 1 18-3. Tristen Rosare scored all three Hanamaulu points.
On Saturday, March 16, the Ladybugs, Waimea B&G and Lokahi Girls each won in Kalaheo’s season finale.
Savannah Kupihea and Mailika Napolean’s combined 16 points led the Kapaa Ladybugs to a 21-14 win over the Hanamaulu Coyotes 2. Maria Gascon scored four points for the Coyotes 2.
Kia Barba’s 13 points put Waimea B&G over the Westside Hornets 33-17. Acosta and Jaime Horkawa each scored six points for the Hornets.
In the last game, the Lokahi Girls topped the Hanamaulu Coyotes 1 45-15 on 11 Camden Lopez points. The Coyotes 1’s Ah Nee scored eight points.
